Report: Memphis freshman Josh Minott to stay in NBA draft

Minott will reportedly remain in the NBA draft and forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility.

Memphis freshman Josh Minott will reportedly remain in the 2022 NBA draft and forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Minott, who wasn’t expected to return to Memphis, was named to the AAC All-Freshman team after averaging 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 33 games. He produced his best game of the season on Jan. 23: 18 points and nine rebounds in a win against Tulsa.

The 6-foot-8 forward is considered a potential first-round pick after a strong showing in the pre-draft process. He has visited with several teams so far and reportedly has upcoming workouts with the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic among others.

Despite seeing a limited role, averaging only 14.6 minutes per game, Minott projects to be an intriguing prospect at the next level. He has great length and athleticism and was the second-most efficient player on the roster, posting a 23.7 rating.

Minott likely formed his decision to stay in the draft based on feedback from executives and scouts after meeting with teams at the combine. He will also have the opportunity to continue to improve his draft stock in his upcoming private workouts.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Chet Holmgren chopped it up with Dirk, Luka at Western Conference finals

Holmgren was seen talking to future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and Mavericks guard Luka Doncic in San Francisco.

Potential No. 1 pick Chet Holmgren on Thursday was seen talking to future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic at Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

Of course, Doncic and the Mavericks fell to the Golden State Warriors as Stephen Curry & Co. advanced to the NBA Finals for the sixth time under head coach Steve Kerr. Golden State has the third-most appearances in the finals (12) in history.

Afterward, Holmgren was seen in a group with Nowitzki and Doncic, along with Mavericks governor Mark Cuban and Doncic’s father. Holmgren talked to Nowitzki for several minutes and even had a message for Doncic, via Ben Golliver of the Washington Post.

Holmgren, a consensus All-American, is in the discussion to be the top pick this year after averaging 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 1.9 assists at Gonzaga. He emerged as a strong prospect on both ends of the court and shot 39% from 3-point range on 3.3 attempts per game.

Certainly, Holmgren enters the draft projected to check a lot of boxes at the next level with his wide-ranging skillset, and the 7-footer can now add some knowledge from Nowitzki and Doncic to his bag.

Filipino center Kai Sotto among prospects to work out with Magic

Sotto, a former four-star prospect, recently participated in a pre-draft workout with the Magic in Orlando.

Kai Sotto, a 7-foot-2 center from the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League, on Thursday participated in a pre-draft workout with the Orlando Magic.

Sotto, a former four-star prospect from the Philippines, averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on 50% shooting from the field in 23 games with the 36ers. He produced perhaps his best game of the season on April 10 after recording a career-high 21 points.

The 20-year-old declared for the NBA draft on April 28 and was said to have at least 12 workouts scheduled with teams beginning this week. The workout with the Magic appeared to be his second one after he posted it to his Instagram story, via Khobi Price of the Orlando Sentinel.

Sotto signed with the NBA G League Ignite for the 2020-21 season but never suited up due to prior obligations with the Philippines national team. He was the first international player to sign a contract with the G League but eventually left to play in the NBL.

The Magic, who were awarded the No. 1 pick, also have selections 32 and 35 in the second round. They started to ramp up their pre-draft workouts recently with prospects like Colorado State forward David Roddy and NC State guard Dereon Seabron among those to meet with them.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Matthew Mayer narrows transfer options down to 4 programs

Mayer, who has one year of eligibility remaining, entered the transfer portal in April while also testing the pre-draft process.

Former Baylor forward Matthew Mayer has reportedly narrowed down his potential transfer options to four programs, according to Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Mayer, who has one year of eligibility remaining, entered the transfer portal in April while also testing the NBA pre-draft process. He announced this week that he would withdraw from the draft and transfer to a different program next season.

He heard from several programs after entering the portal and unveiled his top four options: Illinois, Memphis, North Carolina and Texas Tech. However, the NCAA is in a recruiting dead period, meaning Mayer will not be able to take official visits until May 28.

Mayer averaged 9.8 points, five rebounds, 1.2 steals and one assist on 40.9% shooting from the field in 33 games last season. He is viewed as perhaps the top transfer on the market and could help a program make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament next season.

David Roddy credits work, confidence for improved 3-point shot

Roddy made a tremendous leap shooting the ball and the potential first-round pick credited that jump to his work in the gym.

David Roddy made a tremendous leap shooting the ball last season at Colorado State and the potential first-round pick credited that jump to his hard work in the gym.

Roddy, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, averaged a career-high 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks in 31 games as a junior. He became the 31st player in program history to reach at least 1,000 career points (1,406) on Dec. 11.

He improved in several key categories, including 3-point shooting.

Roddy shot 43.8% from 3-point range on 3.4 attempts, up from 27.8% the previous season. He led the conference in percentage and total 3s (46), and even knocked down a career-high seven triples on Nov. 21 in a win over Creighton.

The 6-foot-6 forward recently worked out with the Indiana Pacers and discussed the rapid improvement of his 3-point shooting last season with the Rams.

I attribute it to my confidence as well as just trusting the work I put in. It was a multi-year process so having certain games where I would catch fire was a sigh of relief my junior year. After that, my confidence just skyrocketed and I understood that my hard work was paying off and I could have fun with it.

Roddy is considered to be a borderline first-round pick after a strong season with the Rams. He presented a matchup problem for teams given his size at 258 pounds and ability to score inside and out. With an improved shot, Roddy figures to be a floor-spacer at the next level.

He declared for the draft in March with the option to return to school but could be a candidate to remain after a strong showing in the pre-draft process. He checks a lot of boxes at the next level and figures to impact teams in a variety of ways.

Roddy has until June 1 to withdraw from the draft and return to school.

Jazz host pre-draft workout with Trevion Williams, others

The Jazz hosted their first pre-draft workout on Thursday with six prospects.

Purdue senior Trevion Williams was among the draft-eligible prospects slated to work out with the Utah Jazz on Thursday, according to Eric Walden of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Williams, who was named the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, averaged 12 points, 7.4 rebounds and three assists in 37 games. He was the only player nationally in the last 30 years to average at least 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists in under 25 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-10 forward is considered to be a potential second-round pick this year after a strong season with the Boilermakers. He was also among the standouts at the draft combine last week, recording 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in one scrimmage game.

In addition to Williams, the Jazz also hosted UConn guard R.J. Cole, Wichita State guard Tyson Etienne, UCLA guard Johnny Juzang, Seton Hall guard Jared Rhoden and Akoldah Gak of the Illawarra Hawks (National Basketball League) on Thursday.

The Jazz are currently the only team in the NBA without a draft pick this year. They could look to acquire a pick on draft night or use their intel from any workouts conducted to potentially target a player in free agency that goes undrafted.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Baylor Scheierman to withdraw from NBA draft, transfer to Creighton

Scheierman committed to Creighton over the likes of Arkansas, Clemson, Duke and Nebraska among others.

Former South Dakota State guard Baylor Scheierman will reportedly withdraw from the 2022 NBA draft and transfer to Creighton University, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Scheierman, who has two years of eligibility left, declared for the draft in March with the option to return to school. He then opted to enter the transfer portal and eventually committed to Creighton over Arkansas, Clemson, Duke and Nebraska among others.

The 21-year-old was among the prospects that competed in the NBA G League Elite Camp last week in Chicago, Illinois. He went scoreless in his first scrimmage game but recorded nine points, eight rebounds and two assists in his second appearance on May 17.

[mm-video type=video id=01g3xn0yyg8rrb8fqs6p playlist_id=01f09kz5ecxq9bp57b player_id=01f1jxkahtwnvzepyp image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g3xn0yyg8rrb8fqs6p/01g3xn0yyg8rrb8fqs6p-6cf23ad6b01b18c17c2c5c84ae19a56a.jpg]

Scheierman was named the Summit League Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 35 games last season. He shot 46.9% from 3-point range and was the only Division I player to lead his team in rebounding and assists.

The addition of Scheierman should make Creighton among the favorites in the Big East next season. He was viewed as one of the top transfer players on the market and will only strengthen their program.

Potential first-round pick Christian Braun to remain in NBA draft

Braun announced that he will remain in the NBA draft and forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility after three years with the Jayhawks.

Kansas junior Christian Braun on Tuesday announced that he will remain in the 2022 NBA draft and forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility after three years with the Jayhawks.

Braun, who was named to the All-Big 12 second team, averaged 14.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and one steal in 40 games to help Kansas win the national title. He became the 65th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and the 20th under head coach Bill Self.

The 6-foot-7 guard emerged as a standout at the draft combine last week in Chicago, Illinois. He recorded the third-highest max vertical leap (40 inches) and averaged 11.5 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals in two scrimmage games.

Braun is considered to be a potential first-round pick this year.

He established himself as a strong two-way player at Kansas that can lock in on defense and shoot from 3-point range. He has very similar measurements to Sacramento Kings guard Donte DiVincenzo, which is perhaps his most common NBA comparison at this point.

Braun likely formed his decision to stay in the draft based on feedback from team executives and scouts after a strong performance in the combine. He will also have the opportunity to improve his draft stock in private workouts with teams.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Williams, who was named to the All-WCC first team, averaged 18 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 33 games. He ranked second in the conference in scoring and finished eighth in program history with 594 total points on the year.

Williams emerged as perhaps the top player at the draft combine last week in Chicago, Illinois. He averaged 15 points, four rebounds and one assist in two scrimmage games. He showed he can do a little bit of everything and solidified himself as a borderline first-round pick.

The 21-year-old climbed draft boards for much of the year and continued that momentum into the combine. He likely earned himself more workouts following that outing and could continue to rise up in the draft, as a result.
