SEC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which SEC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is football, especially in the SEC. Football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best SEC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

SEC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Vanderbilt

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 7th in SEC East

Basketball: 11-21 overall, 3-15 in conference, 14th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team never got anything going. There was a close win over a sleepy Missouri team, and that was about it with no offense and blowout loss after blowout loss.

Football was bad, but basketball was worse. At least the Commodores didn’t finish dead last in the conference in football. The hoops side finally won two SEC game in the final three, but overall it lost 17 of its last 20 games.

13. Ole Miss

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, 6th in SEC West

Basketball: 15-17 overall, 6-12 in conference, 12th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The basketball team started out well and crashed badly. Just when there was a chance to pivot – at 13-11 on a three-game winning streak – it all went wrong with six losses in the final eight games.

While the bad football season led to landing Lane Kiffin, getting there was rough. Losing five games in the last six was rough enough, but the way it dropped the Egg Bowl at Mississippi State – the peeing dog antics and missed extra point – made it uglier.

Path To The Playoff: Clemson’s 5 Steps To The College Football Playoff

What’s does Clemson have to do to get to the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff? What’s the path?

What’s does Clemson have to do to get to the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff? What’s the path?

The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will be played on January 1st, 2021, and the College Football Playoff National Championship will be in Miami on Monday, January 11th.

What does Clemson have to do to get into the fun for a sixth straight season? What are the five steps in the Path to the Playoff?

Path to the College Football Playoff, Step 1

The every-other-year pattern isn’t a bad thing.

The 2016 team went into the offseason really, really mad.

For all the fun and games around Dabo Swinney and the program, there appeared to be a serious business attitude that offseason after Deshaun Watson and company lost a thriller of a national championship to Alabama. There was a loss to Pitt along the way, but the Tigers went on to roll through Ohio State and then beat Bama for the CFP championship.

The 2017 team was good enough to earn the No. 1 playoff seed – despite a loss at Syracuse – and was dumped by the Crimson Tide in the CFP semifinal Sugar Bowl.

The 2018 version got back an ultra-motivated defensive front, welcomed in Trevor Lawrence, and ripped through just about everything in its path – at least after a scare from Syracuse – for a 15-0 season and a national title.

So last year’s team came up short against an epic-hot LSU team in a dream season – hardly any shame losing to that team.

Clemson knows how to dial it up that extra notch a year after a disappointment, and all that national title loss might mean is that the beast is angered.

Of course, it helps when you come up with great recruiting class after great recruiting class to restock the shelves. Even so …

20 Key Instant Impact Transfers: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 13

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 13: 20 key transfers who should make an instant impact on the 2020 season.

[jwplayer AlwKVMCH]

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 13: 20 key transfers who should make an instant impact on the 2020 season.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

The transfer portal is a huge part of the equation in the new college football football landscape, and it can mean everything if you get the right guy.

No, there doesn’t appear to be a Joe Burrow (Ohio State to LSU), Jalen Hurts (Alabama to Oklahoma) or Justin Fields (Georgia to Ohio State) in this year’s transfer class, but for teams that need to fill a spot right away, or need extra depth, these 20 transfers should make an instant impact.

Does it mean that these 20 are going to be superstars? Hardly.

Most of the time, there’s a reason why these guys are transferring – they’re not as good as the other options on their former teams.

For every Burrow, or Hurts, or Kyler Murray, there’s a Tate Martell or Alex Hornibrook who doesn’t turn into the answer.

There are still plenty of key transfers out there looking for a place to land, and there are several others who’ll be locked into big position battles, but for now, these 20 are eligible right away – add Auburn-to-Kentucky QB Joey Gatewood to this list if all goes well and he’s eligible to go – and should be a big deal.

20. OT Scott Lashley, Alabama to Mississippi State

The Bulldogs don’t have a bad situation at offensive tackle – Greg Eiland and Charles Cross should be fine, and there are enough options to shuffle around the line – but getting a former star recruit with great feet and a 6-7, 307-pound frame for the new offense helps. If he’s able to rise up into a starting role, all of a sudden, the Bulldog starting five that struggled last year should be a plus.

19. WR Velus Jones, USC to Tennessee

Tennessee needs more receiver help with Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway gone. Josh Palmer is back after finishing second on the team with 34 catches, and Brandon Johnson should be a factor after missing most of last season, but this group needs a star.

The 6-0, 190-pound Jones might not be that, but he’ll bring immediate help. The speedster was a great kick returner for USC and he caught 36 career passes for 347 yards and a score. At the very least, he’ll be a deep threat.

18. OG Ryan Johnson, Tennessee to Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets need more size and more experience up front. The line was a disaster for the nation’s fourth-worst offense last season, and in comes the versatile 6-6, 310-pound veteran who could be the instant leader for the front five.

17. QB Nick Starkel, Arkansas to San Jose State

It’s the last stop on the Nick Starkel World Tour, starting his career as a decent starter at Texas A&M before leaving for Arkansas. He struggled in a disastrous season for the Hogs, and now he’s off to San Jose State to try taking over for Josh Love. Don’t dismiss this just because it’s San Jose State – the passing game finished fourth in the nation.

16. RB Brittain Brown, Duke to UCLA

Someone has to replace the production of heart-and-soul RB Joshua Kelley on the Bruin offense. There are other options – second-leading rusher Demetric Felton is back – but Brown adds a good veteran presence to the mix.

Promising as a freshman, he ran for over 700 yards and seven touchdowns, and he served as a solid kick returner. Hurt at times over the last few years for the Blue Devils, now he should be a key part of the rotation.

College Football Future Win Total Projections For All 130 Teams: Spring Version

We’re still months away from the start of the college football season, but where should Vegas set the early win projections for every team?

[jwplayer CcmWfo8E]

Spring football is just getting going, the transfer portal is still a factor, and we’re still several months away from the start of the college football season, but where should Vegas be setting the early win projections for every team?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

The line doesn’t lie.

With a whole lot of factors still to be figured out – how the depth charts will shake out, which new players will rise up, where are the key injuries, etc. – where should the win total bar be set for every college football team?

The idea is to get it as close to the pin as possible, set the line for the market, and then let the investment public make the call.

Returning talent, schedules, when the big games come, here’s where the oddsmakers should be setting the win total lines. Once they’re released for real, then it’s about trying to find where the discrepancies are and where the value might be.

One note, the win total line projections are based on the regular season only – bowl games and conference championships don’t count.

As we do this, two things to note.

1) The 3 Key Games are NOT the biggest games on each team’s schedule – these are the 50/50 games on the slate that could go either way. Of course giant rivalry battles are the ones that truly matter, but for the most part, the Key Games are going to be the ones everyone has to figure out to get the right totals.

2) These are NOT our predictions for each team. Those will come this summer when we make a call. These are the projections of where we think the win total lines are going to be set.

Hot Seat Coach Rankings For Every Power Five Team: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 14

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 14: the coaching hot seat rankings for all of the Power Five teams.

[jwplayer Bp3WJh0X]

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 14: the coaching hot seat rankings for all of the Power Five teams.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Being on a hot seat shouldn’t just be about whether or not a guy needs to win a football game or five to keep his job. That’s obviously the biggest part of the staying hired equation, but it’s about pressure, too.

Sometimes, a relatively safe made man has all the pressure in the world on his shoulders to beat the arch-rival, and sometimes a college football head coach just has to win big, or else.

The rankings go from who’s on the coolest of seats in each Power Five conference to who had better come up with a big season to survive.

ACC Spring Coach Hot Seat Rankings

14. Dabo Swinney, Clemson

Yeah, the pressure is on to win the national title or the season is a disappointment, but Swinney has coached in four national championship games in five years. He’s at Clemson for life if it’ll have him.
Record With Team: 130-31

2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 14

13. Bronco Mendenhall, Virginia

The guy just beat Virginia Tech and took the Cavaliers to the ACC Championship and the Orange Bowl. It’s Virginia, the pressure isn’t that intense – he can have a few rough seasons and still be more than comfortable.
Record With Team: 25-27
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 12
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 8
Full Schedule Analysis

12. Jeff Hafley, Boston College

A total disaster of a year would cause a little grumbling, but get to six wins and everything will be okay in Year One. Even if the record is awful, it’ll be seen as a step back to possibly take a big leap forward.
Record With Team: 0-0
Full Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=507346]

11. Scott Satterfield, Louisville

Everyone likes him, the overall attitude has changed around the program, and the talent is starting to come in. There’s still a rebuilding process to be done, but he showed last season what he can do with the Cardinals.
Record With Team: 8-5
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 13
Full Schedule Analysis

10. Dave Clawson, Wake Forest

It’s Wake freaking Forest, and Clawson has managed to take it to four straight bowl games and four straight winning seasons. There might be ebbs and flows to the record throughout the years, but he has already proven what he can do.
Record With Team: 36-40
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 8
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 10
Full Schedule Analysis

9. Mack Brown, North Carolina

It was a positive first season to pull the Tar Heels out of the nosedive, but it has to be a beginning and not a culmination. The recruiting class was great, everything appears to be pointing up, but … win more.
Record With Team: 7-6
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 3
Full Schedule Analysis

8. Mike Norvell, Florida State

He’ll get a very, very, very short leash. He got Memphis over the hump, and the early returns are all positive, but he has yet to win a bowl game and he’s not the A-list of A-list possible hires. Brand name doesn’t always matter – ask UCLA how the Chip Kelly era is going – but it’s Florida State. A losing season will set off panic sirens.
Record With Team: 0-0
Full Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=507096]

7. David Cutcliffe, Duke

A third losing season in five years wouldn’t be a plus, but it’s Duke, and it’s Cutcliffe, so it would take something awful for this to be over in a bad way. However, after 12 years, the “go another direction” thing could come out if the campaign is a total disaster.
Record With Team: 72-79
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 10
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 7
Full Schedule Analysis

6. Geoff Collins, Georgia Tech

It’s still going to take a little while to completely turn this whole thing around – a brutal schedule won’t help – but grade him a bit on a curve. That’s fine, but there had better be signs that something big is coming in 2021 no matter what happens record-wise in 2020.
Record With Team: 3-9
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 11
Full Schedule Analysis

5. Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech

Last season was stronger after a losing 2018 season, but he has lost three straight bowl games and there can’t be another loss to Virginia. At the very least, it would be a big plus if the Hokies were in the mix for the Coastal title until the end.
Record With Team: 33-20
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 4
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 13
Full Schedule Analysis

4. Pat Narduzzi, Pitt

The pressure always seems to be on Narduzzi to do more, and then he goes out and wins 7-to-8 games. However, after five years, one total clunker – and a second losing season in three years – would be a big problem
Record With Team: 36-29
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 2
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 1
Full Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=507021]

3. Dino Babers, Syracuse

The ten-win season of two years ago seems way back in the rearview mirror. With three losing seasons in his four years, last season has to be more of the aberration than 2018.
Record With Team: 23-26
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 9
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 2
Full Schedule Analysis

2. Dave Doeren, NC State

The opening line of last year’s blurb on Doeren: “There’s a problem if the Wolfpack come up with a 4-8 run.” State went 4-8. That was okay once, but it can’t happen again. The team wasn’t even competitive over the second half of the season.
Record With Team: 48-41
2019 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 7
2018 ACC Spring Hot Seat Ranking: 5

1. Manny Diaz, Miami

Miami fans are already a fickle lot as they expect greatness – and are right to do so – but losing to FIU, losing to a bad Duke team, and getting shutout by a Group of Five team in a lower-tier bowl on the way to a losing season is never going to be okay in Coral Gables.

Appalachian State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

11-1: The Shawn Clark era rocks right out the gate. It’s asking a bit much to win at Wisconsin, but there’s a good enough showing to be a more-than-acceptable loss after beating Week Forest on the road. The Mountaineers get by Louisiana at home, finally solve the Georgia Southern issue of last year, and roll through the rest of a manageable schedule with a dominant final five games.

Appalachian State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

6-6: Losses to Wake Forest and Wisconsin end any dreams of going to a New Year’s Six bowl game. Things get worse with a loss to Louisiana and yet another loss to Georgia Southern. The second half of the schedule is easy enough to not worry about a losing season, but losses to Arkansas State and Troy are disappointing.

8-4: The Chanticleers get by Eastern Michigan on the road and pull off a huge win at home over Arkansas State for a 3-2 start to the year. 10-2: The option offense screws up Boise State on the road in a stunner of an opener. It’s followed up by wins over Campbell and FAU at home, and splitting the road games at Louisiana and ULM. With a week off to prepare, the Eagles get Appalachian State yet again in the regular season. Georgia Southern Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

5-7: The Eagles get thumped by Boise State, can’t deal with Florida Atlantic, and lose at Louisiana for a rough start. Georgia State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

9-3: The Panthers beat Alabama … okay, so that’s not happening. But they do beat Murray State, Charlotte, East Carolina, and get by Louisiana for a good start to the season. They split the road games at Arkansas State and Troy, and get by Coastal Carolina and ULM to secure bowl eligibility before the finishing kick. They shock Appalachian State at home to all but take the East title, and they win the rivalry game over Georgia Southern.

Georgia State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

4-8: After getting badly beaten up by Alabama, the Panthers get dropped by Louisiana and struggle in a loss at Charlotte. They lose the road games to Arkansas State and Troy, and struggle over the second half of the season including a home loss to ULM or Coastal Carolina. A loss to Georgia Southern ruins bowl hopes.

Arkansas State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

10-2: The Red Wolves pull off something big with a win at Memphis to open up the season, and follow it up with home wins over Howard and Tulsa for a 3-1 September. They get off to a hot start in the Sun Belt before stunning Appalachian State on the road. There’s a loss along the way – like at Louisiana – but it’s not enough to derail the run to the Sun Belt title game.

Arkansas State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

6-6: ASU loses to Memphis and Michigan on the road, but that’s not that big a deal. A loss at home to Tulsa, though, is a problem, and losing the road games to Appalachian State and Louisiana is a disaster. There’s no real worry about not hitting the six-win mark, but it will take wins over Texas State and South Alabama to get there.
