2020 NFL Combine: 9 takeaways from Giants coach Joe Judge

Here are nine very interesting takeaways from New York Giants head coach Joe Judge, who held an NFL Combine press conference on Tuesday.

The New York Giants took center stage early on Tuesday morning at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana with head coach Joe Judge making the media rounds — first NFL Network, then Sirius XM Radio and lastly, his official press conference.

Although many of the questions asked of Judge were similar in nature, he was forthcoming enough to provide the NFL world with some insight into his coaching decisions, as well as some tidbits on his roster, the 2020 NFL Draft and various other odds and ends.

Here are nine takeaways from Judge’s media blitz.

Familiar faces won’t get preferential treatment

When the Giants begin sifting through the hundreds of available players come free agency, do not expect former members of the New England Patriots or anyone who played their college ball at Alabama to get special treatment.

This means players like safety Devin McCourty will not get bumped to the front of the line, but it also doesn’t preclude the Giants from signing players Judge and his staff are familiar with.

Giants fans should still expect to see some ex-Patriots and ex-Crimson Tide players added when all is said and done.

2020 NFL Combine: Keith Ismael, Chase Claypool on Giants’ radar

The New York Giants have a formal interview schedule with center Keith Ismael and have already met with wide receiver Chase Claypool.

The New York Giants hit the ground running at the 2020 NFL Combine, making several adjustments to their roster, coaching staff and scouting department since landing in Indianapolis on Monday.

On Tuesday, the team was back at it, scheduling a formal interview with San Diego State center Keith Ismael, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

The Giants are scheduled to conduct a formal interview with San Diego State center Keith Ismael in Indianapolis this week. Ismael started 38 games in three years for the Aztecs: 27 at center, 10 at right guard and one at left guard. The 6-3, 310-pound redshirt junior was first-team All-Mountain West in both of his final two years of college ball. He has been projected as high as a third-round pick. Wisconsin’s Tyler Biadasz, Washington’s Nick Harris, LSU’s Lloyd Cushenberry III and Michigan’s Cesar Ruiz are other centers to watch.

It’s worth noting that NFL teams have only 45 formal interviews this year as opposed to the 60 they had in previous years.

In addition to their interest in Ismael, the Giants have also met with Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool. It’s unclear if that was a formal meeting.

The Giants will obviously meet with several dozen prospects at the NFL Combine — both formally and informally — so expect a lot of interview news throughout the day on Tuesday and for the remainder of the week.

Finally, the 2020 NFL Combine has arrived which means the Jacksonville Jaguars’ scouting department will be very busy over the next few days. This week they will get to look at some of the top names from the collegiate ranks and do their “homework” to see if everything they’ve seen on film matches what is displayed during positional drills and interviews.

Each position will be on a different schedule this week and the groups will be split up as follows:

Groups 1-3: Quarterbacks, tight ends, and wide receivers

Groups 4-6: Place kickers, specialists, offensive linemen, and tailbacks

As for the scheduling, each group will be on a six-day schedule. Of course, the first day (which was Sunday, February 23) is for the first group of arrivals and Day 6 for each respective group is when they depart. In between those dates they’ll be doing a wide variety of things from interviews, drills on the field, measurements, and much more.

Key members from each team’s respective front offices will speak at some point during the combine, too. It’s unknown when general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Doug Marrone will take the podium to discuss their offseason plans, but once their times become available we’ll be sure to post them.

The Jags have needs on both sides of the ball. In our list of offseason needs, we listed linebacker, tight end, and the offensive line as the Jags’ top-3 needs, respectively. Other needs worth addressing include the defensive line and receiver because they are strong positions within the 2020 class.

As we get closer to the start of the event we’ll release a list of players to watch for the Jags, who are coming up on a crucial season.
