The Carolina Hurricanes (3-3-0) wrap up a 6-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning (2-2-2) Tuesday at Amalie Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Lightning odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Hurricanes are limping to the end of a long trip to begin the season, going 1-3 in the past 4 games after opening the sojourn with a 6-5 shootout win in Los Angeles back on Oct. 14. Carolina has scored 28 goals through 6 games, or 4.7 goals per game (GPG), while allowing 30 goals, or 5.0 GPG. It’s no wonder the Over is a perfect 6-for-6 to date.

The Lightning were shocked 4-3 in OT on Saturday by the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, blowing a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Tampa Bay, which is playing without G Andrei Vasilevskiy until at least late November as he recovers from back surgery, has allowed at least 3 goals in all 6 games to date.

Hurricanes at Lightning projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (2-0-0, 4.14 GAA, .855 SV%) vs. Jonas Johansson (2-1-2, 3.58 GAA, .902 SV%)

Andersen was knocked out of the game last Tuesday in San Jose due to an upper-body injury. He is projected to get the starting nod to wrap up the trip. If not, it will likely be Antti Raanta (1-1-0, 4.41 GAA, .818 SV%) getting the nod.

Johansson was peppered for 52 shots in the 4-3 OT collapse against the Leafs, making 48 saves. He has allowed at least 3 goals in all 5 games so far, while receiving 15 goals of support, or 3.0 GPG.

Hurricanes at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 5, Lightning 3

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-125) look to wrap up the long road trip on a positive note, and they should be able to find plenty of yawning nets against Johansson, who has been very giving early on.

Carolina was believed to have the best defense in the NHL, at least on paper, but so far there hasn’t been any sign of that. However, the Hurricanes were also believed to be lacking in offense, and there hasn’t been any sign of that, either.

Puck line/Against the spread

The HURRICANES -1.5 (+185) are worth a look for a chance to nearly double up, although go lightly. As a favorite, Carolina has cashed on the puck line just twice in 5 outings to date.

The Lightning +1.5 (-225) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return if you like the home side, and want some insurance. Tampa Bay is 2-1 on the puck line as an underdog, but this is just a little too expensive. Go with the visitors instead.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-110) is the lean, as Carolina is a perfect 6-for-6 so far this season.

The Hurricanes are scoring a lot, and allowing a lot more. And we mentioned above, the Lightning have allowed at least 3 goals in every game. This has the potential to see at least 8 or more goals combined.
