Broncos scheduled interview with QB Malik Willis at NFL combine

Malik Willis totaled 6,942 yards from scrimmage and scored 74 touchdowns (47 passing, 27 rushing) in two seasons at Liberty.

The Denver Broncos scheduled an interview with Liberty quarterback Malik Willis at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

The Broncos also met with Willis at the Senior Bowl in Mobile earlier this offseason. The dual-threat quarterback has been a popular mock draft choice for Denver at No. 9 overall, but it remains to be seen if Denver will target a QB in April’s draft after the Broncos passed on QB prospects in 2021.

Willis (6-1, 215 pounds) spent the first two years of his college career as a backup at Auburn before transferring to Liberty. In two seasons with the Flames, Willis totaled 6,942 yards from scrimmage and scored 74 touchdowns (47 passing, 27 rushing). His 12 interceptions in 13 games last season are a concern.

Willis is an exciting high-upside prospect, but most pundits also consider him a project. It wouldn’t be ideal to ask the 22-year-old quarterback to start right away in the NFL. Willis would benefit from learning behind a veteran.

Denver general manager George Paton scouted Willis in person last fall. Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling has Willis ranked as QB1 on his big board.

The NFL draft will be held in Las Vegas from April 28-30.
