The Buffalo Bills have had a solid offseason thus far.
The team made a big splash signing All-Pro pass rusher Von Miller. Then Buffalo addressed their biggest need by using their top-draft pick to fill a need with cornerback Kaiir Elam.
But the work is never done, Bills general manager Brandon Beane will admit that. So what needs to be done next in Buffalo? Bleacher Report gives their thoughts.
B/R named one thing each team in the NFL should have next on their to-do list this offseason. For the Bills, taking care of Jordan Poyer’s contract situation is named.
Here’s the breakdown:
In April, Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer made a business decision and switched agents in an attempt to push for a new contract. He hired Drew Rosenhaus, who approached the Bills about an extension for his client before the 2022 draft.
Poyer hasn’t attended OTAs. Though he isn’t required to participate in voluntary workouts, the All-Pro safety could threaten to hold out for a new deal.
On one hand, Buffalo may not be in a hurry to sign a 31-year-old safety to big money. However, the Bills didn’t select a player at the position in the draft or sign a notable free agent to fill that potential void, which may suggest that they’ll eventually hammer out an agreement with the 10th-year pro.
Last year, Poyer recorded 93 tackles, eight for loss, nine pass breakups and five interceptions while allowing a minuscule 42.2 passer rating in coverage. He played a big role in the Bills’ pass defense, which gave up the fewest passijng touchdowns and yards leaguewide even though cornerback Tre’Davious White suffered a torn ACL in Week 12.
Without a viable replacement in house, the Bills will probably find a way to resolve Poyer’s contract situation.
The Bills should have extending Poyer on their radar and very soon. The telling time might be minicamp.
At that time, attendance is mandatory. Poyer is supposed to be there. If he is, it could indicate he’s on good terms with the team and a deal could be struck in due time, whether that is during training camp or early in the 2022 season.
Beane and players often do not want to negotiate contracts during the regular season, however, it has still happened in the past.
While 31, locking Poyer up to a few more years alongside side Micah Hyde at safety makes a ton of sense still for the Bills. The two feed off each other and let their smarts lead the way as opposed to pure athletic talent. Age won’t slow these two down just yet.
