Wide receiver Trent Sherfield has signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.
Sherfield, 26, is an under-the-radar receiver that had his best campaign in the NFL last season with the Miami Dolphins. The Bills announced Sherfield’s addition on Monday.
In 2022, Sherfield set career-highs in catches (30), yards (417) and touchdowns (2). His game comes to Buffalo with a speedy element to it–According to NFL Next Gen Stats, one of those two scores saw Sherfield bolted down the field over 20 mph.
Undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2018, signed his first professional contract with the Arizona Cardinals. The 6-foot-1 wideout played in the desert until 2020 before skipping over to the San Francisco 49ers for a year in 2021.
Out of the 78 games Sherfield has appeared in, he only started four. Where he made most of impact in that time was on special teams.
Over the past four seasons, Sherfield has appeared in at least 183 special teams snaps each year.
The fewest amount of those came with the Dolphins in 2022 but that’s where he has his largest role on offense which cut into his special teams responsibilities.
Typically under the watch of Sean McDermott, the coaching staff has liked their depth receiver to make these special teams contributions in western New York. Sherfield would be able to do that for Buffalo, so if the team decided to keep six or seven receivers at the end of training camp this summer, Sherfield would have a good look at a spot on the 53-man roster.
Currently the Bills’ depth chart has Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Khalil Shair, and Deonte Harty near the top. Isaiah McKenzie was released over the weekend.
