Bills’ Sean McDermott says team’s preparation allows for ‘having fun’

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott says that the team’s preparation during the week allows them to ‘have fun’ like they did vs. Jets.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has overseen one of the tougher seasons that the franchise has experienced since he assumed his current position going into the 2017 season. The past six years have seen him guide the Bills to a winning record in all of those campaigns and to the playoffs in every season except one: Josh Allen’s rookie campaign when four differents quarterbacks started for the Bills.

This season is different in the regard that Buffalo has had some bad losses that have dampened fan enthusiasm around the team. Not to mention that season-ending injuries to All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano and cornerback Tre’Davious White have limited how many big plays the defense can create.

The offense was underperforming to the point that offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey was fired to see if that would change the identity of the offense. With quarterbacks coach Joe Brady calling the plays, Buffalo stomped the New York Jets 32-6 while generating the fourth-most points and total yards this season.

During the blowout over the Jets, it seemed that players were showing a sense of joy that has evaded the team this season amidst the losing and drama. McDermott addressed that development:

“Started to see their personality. They were having fun and that’s earned, right?”

That’s being felt from the players, too.

“Our team was energetic as we needed to be,” Allen said via video conference. “Making that a point of emphasis throughout the week like, let’s have fun playing this game. It’s football at the end of the day.”
