Bills’ Mitch Morse: Spencer Brown ‘rose to the occasion’ in first start

A lot of big praise for #Bills rookie Spencer Brown after Sunday’s win… and it sounds like he’s not leaving the starting lineup:

Right at the center of the Buffalo Bills’ changes made to their offensive line this week… was center Mitch Morse.

The positions to Morse’s right saw some massive differences in Week 4. Against the Houston Texans, Daryl Williams slid from right tackle to right guard, next to Morse.

That left an opening which was filled by Spencer Brown at right tackle. The third-round rookie got his first-career start and the players depending on him were impressed with his efforts in the 40-0 win.

“I thought Spencer had tremendous poise, he always has,” Morse said via video conference. “He rose to the occasion. Spencer is an incredibly talented football player. Like any guy on the offensive line, I think he would say he’s got some work to do. But for the most part, I think Spencer preformed admirably, was communicating very well, played beyond his years in that regard.”

Along with Brown, Williams also received a positive review from Morse.

“Daryl has had that versatility in the past and I think he rose to the occasion,” Morse added. “Made my job a lot easier, at times.”

According to the eye test, Brown did have some promising play during the game. Quarterback Josh Allen’s analysis matched that, too.

Allen said Brown’s first start made him look like a vet.

“I think he handled it like a pro,” Allen said via video conference. “He’s a guy that pops off the tape his effort, his attitude, I’m extremely glad we drafted him. He’s a special player and I have a lot of faith in him.”

From the sounds of it, Brown might be getting a second chance in the Bills’ biggest game of the season coming this weekend to prove that wasn’t just a coincidence.

The Bills (3-1) visit the Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) next week. The last time Buffalo did that, Brown wasn’t in the NFL yet and the loss kept the Bills from advancing to the Super Bowl.

Still, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott praised Brown, a great sign. He also did so on Monday, well after the game.

McDermott and the coaching staff went and grinded the heck out of some game tape the day after the Houston win. Upon that further review, McDermott said moving forward he thinks the offensive line which played against the Texans will “continue” moving forward.

“I liked some of what I saw,” McDermott said. “I thought (Brown) showed poise. I thought he showed physical and mental toughness. I thought he gave us a real boost there.”

It remains to be seen if the Bills do continue with that same front five. At minimum, it appears that Williams and Brown will play on the right side for the foreseeable future.

Another area to monitor will be the left guard position and how Jon Feliciano’s health alters this plan.

Ike Boettger started in place of Feliciano due to a concussion he suffered in practice last week. It’s unclear if McDermott referencing keeping the O-line the same includes Feliciano or not.
