Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen has been one of the best at his position in the NFL ever since he went to his first Pro Bowl following the 2020 season. Allen’s ascension into the top echelon of quarterbacks was because of his unique combination of passing and running in his solid frame.
While Allen does not miss games partly because of how big and strong he is, that doesn’t stop others from saying that he needs to run less so that he doesn’t tempt fate every time he runs the football. However, Allen has made it clear plenty of times over the years that his ability to run the football from the quarterback spot is important to the Bills winning games.
It’s one thing for Allen to say that to reporters and media members during one of his press conferences. It’s another thing to say that to a guy that many consider to be the greatest player in NFL history: Tom Brady.
Allen recently made an appearance on Brady’s “Let’s Go!” podcast and the two of them discussed Allen’s running. Brady had this to say in part:
“I would love to see Josh save those for very special moments and special occasions to run the ball rather than to run the ball six minutes into the game on a second-and-6. Not that he shouldn’t run, but when he does run, (expletive) slide and make sure no one hits you because I don’t ever want to see him get hurt and I want to see him out there playing out there because he’s such a (expletive) stud. … I want to see him play another 10 to 12 years and really see how he can maximize his potential.”
Brady made some good points about Allen preserving his body until the moment absolutely calls for him to run, but Allen had this to say in response:
“He (Brady) is right, I’m not saying that he’s wrong, but you can get hurt in the pocket just as much as you can outside the pocket. That’s the only caveat that I have for that. … You gotta go win a football game and sometimes that calls upon me doing something like putting my body on the line for my teammates because of how much I do love my teammates and how much I see them working their tails off too. … That’s where the flip for me is so hard to turn off because I just care so much about winning football games and sometimes it does cause the risk to be a little bit higher than maybe even the reward.”
