The NFL announced on Sunday that some teams in the league were affected by an issue with COVID-19 test results. According to the release from the league, teams using one lab in particular saw an uptick in positive tests for COVID-19 over the weekend.
It turns out that those results were false positives and incorrect. Among the teams to be hit with this issue was the Buffalo Bills.
Via the NFL’s release, the issue sprung from a lab located in New Jersey. Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane said that one was being used by teams in the Northeastern United States and totaled about 10 to 11 clubs.
“We’re just trying to be very cautious,” Beane said via video conference. “We’ve been open with our team. The league jumped on this early to let us know that it wasn’t just our team, it’s a lot of teams. I think some went and canceled the day. We did talk about that at one point, but as we got more information we felt like it was more of a lab issue.”
Beane clarified that the players involved will need to test negative twice and can re-join the team after for practice. That should be the case by Monday, the GM said.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that quarterback Josh Allen was among the group of players that were affected by the issue. Reports out of training camp said prior to Schfter’s report that Allen was not at practice. Others mentioned by various outlets that could also be included include Quinton Jefferson, Vernon Butler, and Harrison Phillips.
