After yet another win over a conference opponent, the TCU Horned Frogs hold sole possession of first place in the Big 12. The Frogs are now 4-0 in Big 12 play with no ranked opponents on the remainder of their schedule.
While no one has been mathematically eliminated, undefeated TCU makes it difficult for the bottom half of the Big 12 to have hope of making it to Arlington.
Here are the full standings.
- TCU (4-0)
- Oklahoma State (3-1)
- Kansas State (3-1)
- Texas (3-2)
- Baylor (2-2)
- Texas Tech (2-2)
- Kansas (2-3)
- Oklahoma (1-3)
- West Virginia (1-3)
- Iowa State (0-3)
TCU’s toughest hurdle is their trip to Austin in November to face the Texas Longhorns. Steve Sarkisian’s unit was looking like a dark-horse Big 12 contender after Quinn Ewers returned. With the Longhorns losing to Oklahoma State, their chances of making a title game run have dropped significantly.
Oklahoma State and Kansas State are both 3-1 in Big 12 play and will play each other this week in Manhatten. With TCU holding a tiebreaker over both teams, this becomes something of a must-win game for both sides.
Even though both Baylor and Texas Tech are 2-2 in conference play, they’ve had two completely different seasons. The Red Raiders were entering what was viewed as a building year with first-time college head coach Joey McGuire. Baylor was coming off one of its best years in program history with plenty of returning talent. They have the same record. They also play each other on Saturday.
In theory, there is a path for the Sooners to make it to Arlington. It’s not very likely to happen. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives the Sooners a 0.1% chance to win the Big 12. But there is a chance. However, all the Sooners need to worry about for the moment is what they can control. Running the table with five straight wins to close the year would be a good start.
That begins with Iowa State in Ames.
