Best of the AFC East: Tight end position lacks flash

Chris Herndon is a very good tight end, but his 2019 season was largely a lost cause. He missed the first four games of the season due to suspension, then injured his hamstring. By the time he got onto the field in November, he played in only one game, injuring his ribs and going on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Herndon’s 2018 season for the Jets was impressive. He caught 39 passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns. It appeared that he, not the Dolphins’ Gesicki, had the most promise. The 2018 fourth-round pick outplayed his Jets counterparts to move up to the top of the depth chart and become an outlet for quarterback Sam Darnold.

Ryan Griffen filled in for Herndon last year as the Jets traded for him, and he produced a decent year. Griffin caught 34 passes for 320 yards and five touchdown receptions. The Jets re-signed him after the season, but the seven-year-pro was placed on the PUP list last week. The Jets hope he will be back ready before week 1 so that he and Herndon can be utilized in two tight end sets.
