It’s hard to believe that just two years ago, the Chicago Bears were a franchise that had a promising future. They rode a 12-4 record to a NFC North title and a playoff berth. Even after that heartbreaking loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC wild card round, the future seemed bright for the Bears.
Now, they’re a team that could soon be on the rebuild — or at least moving on from general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy.
While wanting to fire Pace and Nagy might’ve once seemed like an overreaction, the Bears are now five games deep into a losing drought where their offense remains a laughing stock. The one thing that has doomed this pairing has been the fact that Pace got the quarterback wrong in choosing Mitchell Trubisky over the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. And, unfortunately for Nagy, it’s something he’s now tied to.
Chicago hasn’t done anything since that 2018 season, where the defense played at an incredibly high level and carried them to the postseason. Last season, the Bears were lucky to finish .500, and the same could be said for this season, especially with a favorable schedule down the stretch.
Following the bye week, the final six games will go a long way in determining the future of this franchise and whether Pace and Nagy return for the final year of their deals or the Bears will be gearing up for a new regime.
As the Bears head into an important week, host Ryan O’Leary (@RyanOLearySMG) and myself discussed how hot the seats have gotten for Pace and Nagy, discussed the embarrassment against the Packers and preview Chicago’s Week 13 contest in the 14th episode of our Bears Wire podcast.
