Bears rookie Jack Sanborn is expected to play a bigger role, and he’s confident he’ll succeed in whichever linebacker position he plays.

The Bears lost a defensive star and leading in linebacker Roquan Smith, who was traded to the Ravens ahead of the NFL trade deadline. There’s certainly no replacing Smith’s production, but it also gives some younger players, like undrafted rookie Jack Sanborn, an opportunity for additional reps.

Sanborn was a preseason standout for the Bears, where he showcased his instincts and intensity on both defense and special teams. That included nabbing a couple of takeaways — and interception and fumble recovery.

“What’s there not to like about Sanborn?” defensive coordinator Alan Williams said. “He just needs a chance to get on the field and perform.”

Bears coach Matt Eberflus threw Sanborn into consideration to replace Smith at the WILL position, and according to NBC Sports Chicago, Sanborn saw some reps at MIKE during practice this week. Not to mention, Sanborn saw some reps at SAM in last week’s loss.

Safe to say, Sanborn could line up at any of those positions, and he’s confident he’ll succeed in whatever role is required of him.

“I’m confident in myself,” Sanborn said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “I believe I’m a smart player, I understand what the role of the defense is, where I’m supposed to be doing my job. Then once that’s good, try to do some more. So, I’m not going to try to do anything crazy, I’m going to try to be myself.”

With Sanborn expected to play a bigger role in these final nine games, his coaches and teammates share that confidence.

“I don’t think he needs any advice,” said linebacker Nicholas Morrow. “I’m not gonna get in his ear to make him nervous or anything like that.”
