Baker Mayfield takes a jab at Texas, begins trash talk ahead of TX-OU

Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has started the trash talk ahead of the Red River Rivalry.

It’s not rivalry week until former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield chimes in.

In such an usual year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it may not feel like your typical TX-OU week. The State Fair of Texas is closed, the attendance at the game will be limited and both programs are coming off of an unexpected conference loss.

If you needed something to spark your inspiration leading up to the Red River Rivalry, Mayfield provided it via his latest Instagram post. He took a jab at the Longhorns in burnt orange while flashing the now-iconic Horns Down gesture.

“Orange on me but it ain’t burnt…horns down forever. You know what week it is.”

Mayfield has never shied-away from expressing his pure hatred towards the University of Texas. He grew up in Austin and was never recruited heavily by the program.

He chose to walk on at Texas Tech before eventually transferring to Oklahoma. It’s no secret that Mayfield had a successful collegiate career in Norman, winning three consecutive Big 12 titles. He also led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in 2015 and 2017.

After losing to Texas in 2015, Mayfield defeated the Longhorns each of his final two seasons. His post will likely get under the skin of a few fans and players associated with Texas, but we can safely assume that it’s just the start of the trash talk that’s to come this week.

It’s the history and tradition that makes this rivalry one of the greatest in all of college football.
