Apparently, there is an NFL team out there that believes Justin Fields is a fourth-round pick. Okay, if you’ve picked yourself up off of the floor from laughing so hard you almost passed out, we can continue on.
We get it. We’ve heard the ridicule before about Ohio State quarterbacks in the NFL, most recently Dwayne Haskins. But let’s be real about quarterbacks in general. It’s a crapshoot at best. Remember when Ryan Leaf was considered an equal to Payton Manning?
There’s a reason that some of the same teams who are picking early in the 2021 draft are again looking for a franchise quarterback. Yeah, we’re looking at you Jets. But Sam Darnold was a can’t miss prospect, and maybe he still is in the right system.
Sometimes teams get it wrong, but there are many more factors that go into whether a quarterback will have success at the next level. Schemes, work ethic, being able to handle the media, and team chemistry just to name a few.
Will Justin Fields be a great NFL quarterback? Only time will tell. Much will depend on where he goes and how soon he’s thrown into the fire. However, I am certain of this… any scout that for one second thinks that Fields is anything less than a first-round talent should not be an NFL scout.
Fields will have the opportunity to show scouts what he can do at the Ohio State pro day on March 30. From what I’ve witnessed, my guess is he’ll do nothing less than impress those watching.
