After a solid weekend that ended with a sweep of No. 24 Texas A&M, two Crimson Tide softball stars earned weekly awards from the Southeastern Conference.
Senior Bailey Hemphill was named conference Player of the Week, while sophomore Lexy Kilfoyl was awarded Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Hemphill had a solid weekend at the plate, going 5-for-6 with 7 RBI in three games against the Aggies. In addition to recording five hits, Hemphill walked five times in the series, reaching base in 12 of 13 opportunities. Hemphill’s patience has paid off in her career, as she reached the 200-walk mark in game one against Texas A&M on Thursday, making her the 4th player in league history to reach that number.
For Kilfoyl, she made her presence felt all over the field in the Texas A&M series. Kilfoyl made an appearance in the circle in every game of the series. In 7.2 innings, the Land O’Lakes, Florida native struck out 13 batters while only allowing 9 hits. In Friday’s start, Kilfoyl struck out 8 batters over five innings in the 11-3 victory.
Kilfoyl has won the newcomer of the week award twice this season, and Hemphill’s honor is the second time that a Crimson Tide player has won player of the week. Kaylee Tow won the award on February 22 after a clean sweep of the Easton Bama Bash, which included two wins over LSU.
The Crimson Tide return to the diamond this weekend against the tough No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks, who are a perfect 12-0 in SEC play. Game one of the series is Friday at 6 P.M. CT.
