As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.
Each day, we’ll release anywhere from 2-4 player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.
Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.
Next up on the list is wide receiver John Metchie III out of Brampton (Canada).
John Metchie III, Wide Receiver
Height: 6-0 / Weight: 195
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Brampton (Canada)
High School: The Peddie School (N.J.)
HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 275 overall / No. 40 WR / No. 6 N.J.
HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 187 overall / No. 15 ATH / No. 4 N.J.
Analysis: Rising sophomore John Metchie III might not have made a major impact on the game field yet, but he’s already proven that he’s capable of being a big-time college receiver.
Back during Alabama’s 2019 A-Day game, the 6-foot, 195-pound pass-catcher hauled in an impressive five catches for 133 yards. Much like the more well-known Tide receivers at the time, Metchie did a little bit of everything, turning short designed plays into long gains.
With Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III, Metchie is in prime condition to earn the No. 3 job behind DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, but he’ll have stiff competition from Slade Bolden, Tyrell Shavers and potentially Xavier Williams.
The No. 3 receiving role — and even the No. 4 — has proven to be a valuable, productive position in Alabama’s offense.
