HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 103 overall / No. 7 DT / No. 5 MS

Analysis: Byron Young was one of the many first-year defensive linemen to earn playing time last season. The Mississippi native played in all 13 of Alabama’s games while notching five starts.

On the season, he accumulated 23 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and one pass deflection.

Yes, there is still room for Young to grow, but for a true freshman, he showed enough potential to be considered an important piece along the Crimson Tide’s defensive front for the foreseeable future after being a top 100 prospect coming out of West Jones High School.

With LaBryan Ray, Christian Barmore and DJ Dale expected to be the starting three, don’t expect Young to see as many starts this season — unless the injury bug hits again. But still expect him to be an important contributor.
