As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.
Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.
Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.
Next up on the list is redshirt freshman running back Trey Sanders out of Port Saint Joe (Fla.).
Trey Sanders, Running Back
Height: 6-0 / Weight: 214
Class: Redshirt Freshman
Hometown: Port Saint Joe (Fla.)
High School: IMG Academy
HS ranking (247Sports): 5-star / No. 6 overall / No. 1 RB / No. 2 FL
HS ranking (Rivals): 5-star / No. 3 overall / No. 1 RB / No. 2 FLA
Analysis: Despite having Najee Harris and Brian Robinson Jr. ahead of him on the depth chart, Trey Sanders was expected to have a big role in Alabama’s backfield during his first season. Unfortunately, a foot injury prevented the former five-star from ever seeing a live carry in game.
Now, the redshirt freshman should be back and ready to roll for his second season. But where will he fit on in on the depth chart? Is it possible that he can emerge as the No. 2 option behind Harris? It’s certainly possible.
The more important question, however, is what will that role entail with Harris commanding 15-20 carries per game? Will it yield the same success — from a statistical standpoint — that being the No. 2 backs in the past has yielded? That remains to be seen.
Either way, the Crimson Tide are loaded in the backfield, and Sanders is a big reason why.
