A MLB Hall of Famer is going to be an emergency goalie for a NHL team, which is awesome

We need to see Larry Walker take the ice Sunday.

Things in the real world right now are, in a word, crazy.

I get paid to write about sports and the fun we have watching them or the fun we have debating them or the fun we having laughing at them.

So let’s take a step away from the seriousness of the outside world for a little bit and look at an awesome sports story that was announced on Tuesday at a time when a lot of other big sports news – postponements, fans not being allowed at games, etc – was breaking.

Larry Walker, who will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, is going to serve as the emergency goalie for the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.

Yup, the 53-year-old former outfielder who played in over 1,100 game for the Colorado Rockies, could play in an actual NHL game, though the odds of that happening are pretty slim.

And yup, this is just a nice way to pay tribute to a hockey nut like Walker. But come, it could happen! We’ve seen a random emergency goalie pull of something wild already this year in the NHL.

Walker grew up playing hockey in Canada before hanging up his skates for baseball, which turned out to be a really good career decision.

He’ll be honored before Sunday’s Avalanche game as the team’s “honorary” emergency goalie and then sit and watch from the stands as the team takes on the Vegas Golden Knights.

Now, I’m not rooting for injuries, but let’s say the game gets out of hand in either direction – wouldn’t it be fun if two of Colorado’s goalies suddenly came down with something and couldn’t go on? Then in came Walker, who was always tough as nails in his baseball days, to finish things off?

We need more fun right now.

Something like that could definitely do the trick.
