Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger appears to be laser-focused on the upcoming season.
Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman relayed a few of Ehlinger’s comments on Thursday regarding how the Heisman Trophy candidate is handling quarantine life thus far.
Away from football, Ehlinger has been busy with his Go-Fund Me account that has reached over $100,000 in donations. He’s also spent time with head coach Tom Herman in distributing food to the needy.
In terms of preparing for his upcoming senior season, Ehlinger has been taking every step possible to be prepared both physically and mentally. Although Ehlinger mentioned that he’s approaching this time of uncertainty as if the college football season were to start on time, it’s still unclear if or when sports will be given the green light to resume.
You can bet that when it does, Ehlinger will be ready.
He sticks to a strict routine during quarantine. He wakes up at 6:30 a.m. each day to lift weights in his make-shift garage gym, oftentimes with teammate and younger brother Jake. Ehlinger then attends web meetings with assistant coaches or the entire team.
Once meetings have wrapped up, he goes to run on an open field for cardio before his online classes begin at 12:30 p.m. When schooling ends around 3:00 p.m., he focuses on mobility work and treatment.
Late in the afternoons, he’ll meet his brother in the backyard with a football.
“Obviously I have a workout partner. He’s probably gotten sick of being in quarantine with me because I’ll take him in the backyard and i’ll pelt footballs at him when I want to throw.”
Jake is currently a linebacker for the Longhorns, and although the duo likely experiences a love hate brotherly relationship at times, he gets to witness first hand the type of mentality older brother Sam possesses in terms of preparation and focus.
Ehlinger spends countless hours communicating with teammates and has offered his garage gym availability to players who are local in the area. He knows he can’t accomplish these goals alone.
