At 3-0, Seahawks hold strong lead against the rest of the NFC West

It’s three’s all around for the 3-0 Seattle Seahawks who defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3 to in Week 3. But for Seattle, the biggest number to takeaway from the weekend is two.

As in, the Seahawks now hold a two-game lead over not one, not two, but all three division rivals in the NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers are all tied for second/last place in the division with identical 1-2 records. All four teams played in the late afternoon window, but only two emerged victorious.

The Cardinals hosted the Detroit Lions, who were fresh off a Week 2 home loss to the Buccaneers. Detroit bounced back nicely with a 20-13 win over Arizona to return to the Motor City in the win column. Next up for the Lions will be a home Monday Night Football showdown against the Seahawks.

As for the Rams and 49ers, those two duked it out at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, and this was massive for Seattle. The 49ers have often had Los Angeles’ number in recent years, but it was the Rams who had the last laugh on Sunday. Los Angeles, after their 0-2 start, upset San Francisco by scoring 13-unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers nearly stole victory from the jaws of defeat with a near-wild ending filled with multiple laterals, but could not pull off the miracle.

Now we’re in a world where the Seahawks have a firm grasp on first place in the division, something they have not won since 2020. Coincidentally, the last time Seattle started 3-0 was in 2020. However, head coach Mike Macdonald is not letting his solid start distract the team. When asked about how he felt about his record, his response was measured.

“I’m glad we won today. Yeah, we got a long way to go. This is a long
season. We got a big game coming up. Our first goal is to win each game and the next goal is to get in the dance and then the next goal is win the division. We’re a long way from there. We can help our chances again next week if we go to Detroit and get a win.”
