Jim Harbaugh no longer serving as honorary captain for Michigan season opener

Walking it back. #GoBucks

The Michigan brass has finally come to its senses.

Literally days after the NCAA handed down a four year show-cause penalty including a one-year suspension should Jim Harbaugh re-enter the college ranks, Michigan threw up a proverbial bird at the NCAA and announced that Harbaugh would be the honorary captain for the season-opening home game vs. Fresno State on Aug. 31.

There’s reading the room and then there’s being tone def, and the latter is exactly what the announcement felt like.

Now, however, it appears as though more sensible Michigan men have decided against it in the wake of all of the NCAA suspensions, investigations, and noise coming from Ann Arbor.

OK, well, not really. According to new head coach Sherrone Moore, the move was made because Harbaugh called and said that he did not want to be way from the Chargers. All of this after a draft of the NCAA’s notice of allegations was obtained by ESPN, followed by Harbaugh denying any wrongdoing at a press conference in L.A. after a Chargers practice.

We’re sure those in the corner of Michigan will see this as a sign of weakness rather than sticking it to the man, while the other corner will continue to pile on what the brass in Ann Arbor were trying to pull off in a cloud of NCAA muck.

Regardless, if you are an Ohio State fan, at least you won’t have to see Harbaugh be carried on shoulders in the Big House with a grin that multiple suspensions can’t wipe away.
