QB prospect Caleb Williams working with ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello

Caleb Williams, one of the top QBs in this year’s class, is working with ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello leading up to the NFL draft.

We didn’t have this on our NFL offseason bingo card.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams, widely considered one of the best quarterbacks — and perhaps the best QB — in this year’s class, has been training with Rich Scangarello leading up to the NFL draft.

Scangarello, 51, served as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2019. He was fired by then-head coach Vic Fangio after one season.

Some Broncos fans are convinced Drew Lock’s development would have taken a different path if Scangarello returned in 2020. After completing 64.1% of his passes and going 4-1 as a starter in 2019, Lock’s completion percentage dropped to 57.3% and he went 4-9 as a starter in 2020 with Pat Shurmur calling plays.

After being fired by the Broncos, Scangarello was a senior offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 before being hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a quarterbacks coach in 2021. Scangarello then served as OC and QBs coach for one season at Kentucky before being fired.

Now a coaching free agent, Scangarello is helping Williams prepare for the NFL draft. The Broncos do not pick until No. 12 so barring a trade, Williams seems unlikely to land in Denver this spring.
