The Iowa State Cyclones faced a tough Texas receiving corps in 2022. They will have a new matchup problem to worry about this season.
The last time these two teams met, Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy had a strong game. Worthy caught eight passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns. The talented receiver caught the two touchdowns in about as reasonably good coverage as you would expect from an Iowa State cornerback. Worthy was simply too good to cover.
Now, the Cyclones have another difficult cover to prepare for in Texas receiver Adonai Mitchell. The Georgia transfer looks to have finally asserted himself as a game deciding force after making clutch receptions last week against TCU.
When you add in what Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jordan Whittington bring to the offense, it’s unclear how Iowa State plans to defend the Texas receiving corps. Yet it’s the dynamic duo of Worthy and Mitchell that leave perhaps the most perplexing conundrum for the Cyclones.
If Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is accurate on Saturday, the Longhorns should be able to generate several positive plays through the air. Ewers could look to get his top weapons the football early and often against Iowa State.
