CBS Sports analysts views Texas as most overrated team in Big 12

Is Texas overrated ahead of 2023?

Texas is believed to have the best roster in the Big 12 and one of the most talented rosters from top to bottom in all of college football.

However, for one CBS Sports analyst that is simply not enough. A recent article by CBS Sports broke down the most overrated and underrated teams in the Big 12 among other things, and David Cobb explained why he views Texas as the most overrated team in the conference.

He cited the fact that this isn’t the first time they’ve had a good roster on paper, and that they often fail to meet expectations is a recipe for disaster in 2023.

The Longhorns went just 8-5 last season and haven’t appeared in the Big 12 Championship Game since the league began playing one again in 2017. Yet, we’re supposed to believe the Longhorns are back simply because they’re more talented than the rest of the league? News flash: Texas has often been the Big 12’s most talented program since the end of Mack Brown’s coaching tenure, and success hasn’t followed. The four in-state Big 12 opponents on Texas’ schedule should be particularly anxious to take a final shot at the Longhorns before they leave for the SEC. That dynamic, combined with undeservedly lofty expectations, is a recipe for disappointment.

While Texas has had talented rosters in years past, one could argue that this is the most talented roster since 2009. They have depth at every position, and have a chance to turn the program around. ESPN’s FPI favors them in all but one game, but Texas needs to prove themselves on the field.

I wouldn’t agree with the notion they are overrated, but may suggest this is the first time they have been properly rated in over a decade.
