Jahmyr Gibbs was selected by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft just over a week ago and he already has his jersey number. Gibbs, who wore No. 1 while at Alabama, will be wearing No. 26 for the franchise.
The former Crimson Tide running back’s No. 1 jersey number is currently assigned to veteran cornerback Cameron Sutton.
When the Lions selected Gibbs at No. 12, many fans and draft analysts were shocked. Not because he was selected in the first round, but because of how early the pick was.
The Lions didn’t feed into any of the discussion, as they front office and coaching staff has made it clear that he would have ben their pick at No. 6 too if they didn’t trade back.
The rookie running back will likely see a majority of the snaps in 2023, but is going to split time with veteran David Montgomery, who just recently joined the roster.
