The media’s first team all-conference selection is usually predictable.
For the most part, the honor is given to the longest tenured starters rather than the best. The first team is usually more representative of career achievement than who had the best season.
On rare occasions, an underclassman or surprise candidate is elected to the league’s first team. Texas saw Caden Sterns voted onto the squad after a strong freshman season. Albeit, Sterns did not have much competition for top safety consideration in the conference.
The Big 12 media voted Brock Purdy ahead of Spencer Rattler in 2020, despite Rattler having a better season. For someone to unseat one of the more accomplished players, like Spencer Sanders for example, they will need to be head-and-shoulders above the rest of the league.
