By Florida football standards, the 2021 season has already been a failure for the Gators and head coach Dan Mullen. They’re 4-4 and coming off a lopsided 34-7 loss to rival (and top-ranked) Georgia.
But being a college football coach is all about forward thinking. Your team may be struggling now, but coaching college football demands recruiting and sustaining a program over multiple seasons. It’s why you seldom see a successful NFL head coach go into college coaching — there’s a lot of work that has nothing to do with actual coaching.
So, when Dan Mullen said during a Monday press conference that “we’ll do recruiting after the season,” it took plenty of college football fans by surprise. After all, it’s always time for recruiting.
Did Mullen really mean that, though?
