Red Wings at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Thomas Greiss (0-3-1, .917 SV%, 2.54 GAA) vs. Jake Oettinger (first NHL start)

Greiss faced a season-low of 22 shots on goal Tuesday and it was the 22nd shot that handed him and the Wings the overtime loss. Four of his 10 goals allowed through four games were power-play markers.

Oettinger draws his first career start in the NHL with Anton Khudobin starting the season 3-0-0 and earning a night off. The 22-year-old was the Stars’ first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in two NHL games last season and stopped all eight of the shots he faced in relief.

Red Wings at Stars: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Stars 4, Red Wings 1

Money line (ML)

The STARS (-200) are about as safe as of a betting play as there is in hockey right now. The reigning Western Conference champions have shown no weakness following a delayed start to the season due to COVID-19 issues and numerous injury concerns, including C Tyler Seguin (hip) and LW Jamie Benn (lower body).

The Red Wings registered 51.52% of the total shot attempts, including blocked and missed shots at 5-on-5 Tuesday, but the Stars had 56.52% of the scoring chances.

Dallas still has plenty of healthy offensive talent, led by RW Joe Pavelski. The Stars aren’t throwing this game by turning to Oettinger; he’ll get a nice soft matchup for his first-ever start.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Red Wings were able to get to overtime Tuesday in a game that saw just 43 total shots on goal and 66 total shot attempts at 5-on-5. The Stars, who came into the game 8-for-12 on the power play, went 1-for-4 while the Red Wings’ special teams futility continued with an 0-for-3 effort with the man advantage.

The Stars don’t need to change much in order to earn a more convincing victory in a lopsided mismatch against the lowly Wings.

Take DALLAS -1.5 (+125) to win by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (-140) again. The Stars will need to do the bulk of the scoring, but Greiss was up to the task Tuesday. Red Wings games are averaging a total of 5.00 goals, and their struggling offense is the biggest reason why.
