The report from Sunday night that top target Urban Meyer has declined the opportunity to return to coach the Texas Longhorns has been confirmed. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported as much, now the University of Texas will determine their next move. Tom Herman will remain the head coach as of now and hopefully prepare to play Kansas on Saturday.
Another name that some have kicked around internally is Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen. He was a Meyer assistant at Utah and Florida before taking the head coaching job at Mississippi State. He returned to Florida to take the head coaching job in 2018. Could he be interested in another college job? Not likely.

Mullen isn’t a name that Texas was reportedly kicking the tires on but a name that should have been under consideration. Mullen is more likely to leave Florida for an NFL job, not a college football head coaching job outside of Gainesville, Florida.
Once the college football regular season ends, there could be so more action on the head coaching carousel front. Matt Campbell of Iowa State, Mario Cristobal of Oregon, and Steve Sarkisian of Alabama are the names to consider. Could Sark be the one to cross off next? According to Zach Barnett of Football Scoop, Texas hasn’t hired a sitting assistant to be the head coach since 1951.

It doesn’t hold much weight with the current regime but an interesting tidbit from Barnett. With other schools making decisions, there could be another name that we haven’t highlighted at this point.
