It’s technically late October but we only just now witnessed Ohio State football’s first game of the season as the Big Ten finally kicked things off this weekend. That means for the first time since USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg began re-ranking the college football teams weekly, there was actually some game tape to go off of in the heartland.
Penn State’s loss, Wisconsin’s bludgeoning of Ilinois, and Michigan’s whitewashing of Minnesota shook things up a bit across the latest re-rank, but Ohio State remained steady at No. 3, just behind Clemson (1), and Alabama (2).
You have to wonder if the Buckeyes would have begun the season earlier if it would be a consensus No. 3 team right now. Most analysts, experts, and polls had OSU as the No. 2 team behind only Clemson, but the Crimson Tide have put together a few weeks of pretty impressive ball to move the perception needle a tick higher than the Buckeyes.

Rounding out the top ten of the USA TODAY re-rank behind those three teams are Georgia (4), Notre Dame (5), Oklahoma State (6), Cincinnati (7), Michigan (8), Oregon (9), and Texas A&M (10). Big Ten teams Wisconsin (13), Indiana (24), and Penn State (25) also appear in the top 25.
