Oklahoma wins quadruple-overtime thriller 53-45 over Texas in 116th matchup

It’s inexplicable, but Oklahoma found a way in the end. The Sooners won a quadruple-overtime thriller over Texas in their annual game.

It’s inexplicable, but Oklahoma found a way in the end.

The Sooners lost the turnover margin and replaced Spencer Rattler after two bad decisions in the first half. They blew a 14-point lead with 4:38 left in the fourth-quarter.

Oklahoma, though, won a four-overtime Red River Showdown thriller 53-45 over Texas for its first conference win of 2020.

The Sooners jumped out to a 10-0 lead after a forced fumble and a three-and-out. Texas would then go score 10 unanswered points after Oklahoma turnovers by Spencer Rattler (interception) and T.J. Pledger (running back).

Rattler would be replaced. Oklahoma would go on to score once, as would Texas, before he returned after halftime.

The Sooners jumped out to a 31-17 lead in the third-quarter while the defense forced four-straight punts. With 4:38 left, Oklahoma blew that 14-point lead after two quick drives by Texas’ quarterback Sam Ehlinger and the game went to overtime.

It got wild.

Texas scored with relative ease in the first overtime period. Oklahoma used an unbelievable throw from Rattler to Austin Stogner to score its first time.

Then, the Sooners scored on a quarterback sneak from Rattler. Ehlinger responded with a 25-yard run of his own.

Oklahoma would go onto stop Texas in the third overtime period and block the field goal. The Sooners settled for a field goal attempt with their chance to win, and then Gabe Brkic missed his second field goal ever at Oklahoma.

Rattler got the last laugh, though, as a 25-yard passing touchdown to Drake Stoops turned into a game-winner after Tre Brown’s game-sealing interception.

The Sooners now head off into a bye week before picking back up conference play against TCU on Oct. 24 on the road.
