There’s been plenty of concern on whether or not the Texas football program produces enough quality NFL talent.
Recruits will oftentimes choose another program such as Ohio State or Alabama simply with hopes of becoming a top NFL Draft pick in the future. However, you still have to have a successful collegiate career in order to accomplish those dreams.
ESPN recently took a look at the top schools that produce the most college football talent at each position. ESPN’s Stats and Information department came up with a list of parameters in order to determine the rankings.
It included the BCS era only, which began in 1998. They then chose to leverage Pro Football Reference data to determine the draft round and average NFL value. In terms of college performance, additional points were awarded for all-conference and All-America awards.
While rival Oklahoma dominated Texas in the majority of categories, the Longhorns still appeared within the top 10 of quarterbacks, running backs, defensive line and defensive backs.
Texas’ highest rating by position group was at quarterback, largely in part due to the success of Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Sam Ehlinger. The Longhorns were not listed at wide receiver, tight end, offensive line or linebacker.
