49ers sign final member of 2020 draft class

The 49ers have officially signed all the members of their 2020 NFL draft class after Charlier Woerner inked his deal.

The 49ers only had one player left to sign from their 2020 NFL draft class heading into training camp. They got that out of the way Monday when former Georgia tight end Charlie Woerner took a physical and signed his four-year rookie deal with San Francisco.

The physical was the last formality for Woerner before he could ink his standard four-year contract.

San Francisco selected Woerner in the sixth round, No. 190 overall. The 49ers acquired the pick from the Eagles in exchange for the No. 210 pick and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin.

Woerner figures to factor in right away as a blocker. He excelled in that role in four years with the Bulldogs. On the other hand, his receiving production was minimal. He caught just 34 passes for 376 yards and one touchdown.

There’s a chance Woerner plays a significant role as a rookie. San Francisco doesn’t have a ton of depth at tight end behind George Kittle. Ross Dwelley is a versatile blocker, but leaves something to be desired as a pass catcher. Only six tight ends ever have a lower yards per catch than Dwelley (6.2) on at least 17 receptions — his career total. Woerner could wind up surpassing Dwelley as the TE2 if he can offer more in the way of playmaking in the passing game.

For now though Woerner is behind Dwelley on the depth chart going into camp, and will battle with second-year tight end Daniel Helm and undrafted rookie Chase Harrell for a roster spot.
