NFL players will be participating in training camp at the end of this month. With this in mind, the focus shifts from offseason considerations to on-field production.
Business will pick up quickly when the players hit the field. There are many things that the Bufflao Bills’ front office, especially general manager Brandon Beane will need to consider in the near future. While the on-field production will play out, Beane will handle the off-the-field issues which will have long-term impacts on the team.
Here are four questions that Beane and company will consider ahead of the training camp period:
1. When will the team ink Tre’Davious White to a long-term deal?
White has finally garnered the league-wide praise that he deserves, being named as an All-Pro and Pro Bowler for the 2019 campaign. He tied for the league-lead with six interceptions while facing the league’s best competition. White did not allow a touchdown his way throughout the season.
White was this regime’s first draft pick under Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott. His selection has been a home run. In a league that values offense, the need for a lockdown cornerback is essential for any defense. Without question, the Bills have their man. The Bills exercised the fifth-year option on White, so he’ll be here through 2021.
However, it would be beneficial to lock up White as long as possible. The sides can still work out a long-term deal, which could keep the 25-year-old in Western New York for a long time.
The longer the team waits on reaching out to White for an extension, the more the market price will increase for cornerbacks. Lockdown cornerbacks are not cheap, as the top cornerbacks place their respective teams on the hook for $14-16 million in cap space. Nevertheless, it will be money well spent for Buffalo.
