Bob McKay, Offensive Line (1967-69)

Bob McKay was apart of one of the best teams in Texas Longhorns history, the 1969 National Championship team. During his time starting on the Texas Longhorns offensive lines, the Longhorns achieved a record of 20-1-1. They won the National Championship after defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which needed a late comeback to do so.

For his efforts in that perfect 1969 season, McKay earned consensus All-American honors. He was also named All-Southwest Conference for the second time in his playing career. McKay would be selected to play in the 1970 Hula Bowl. An all-star postseason game for the best in college football.

Following the season, McKay was drafted to the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the 1970 NFL Draft. He would spend six seasons in Cleveland before finishing out his career with the New England Patriots until 1978. In his final year in Cleveland, McKay got into a skirmish with future Hall of Famer “Mean” Joe Greene. In this altercation, McKay was on the receiving end of a painful kick.

“Joe Greene got fined like $500; DeLeone got fined like $100,” Dieken said. “And, Bob McKay got fined for getting kicked in the groin.” – Story on the alternation
