For every football team across the nation, the quarterback is always the most important piece for any football team. Much the reason why at the NFL level, they are the highest paid position across the league. If you don’t have a quarterback, your opportunity to win is slim. Who would be the second-most essential player on a team? Usually if falls under one of the “money five” positions, the top five positions for any football team. A quarterback, blindside blocking tackle, wide receiver, pass rusher or cornerback.
According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports that player would starting left tackle Samuel Cosmi. Although as Hummer points out it could be linebacker Joseph Ossai, who is being asked to be the team’s new quarterback hunter.
This could easily be standout linebacker Joseph Ossai, who was one of the only constants on defense for Texas a season ago. But I’ll lean with the expertise of Horns247 senior writer Jeff Howe, who stumped for Cosmi. For those unfamiliar, Cosmi is likely Texas’ best offensive line prospect in a decade. He’s a lockdown presence at left tackle and hugely important in keeping Sam Ehlinger clean, especially when you consider how many hits Ehlinger already takes per game on designed runs. There’s also the fact that Texas’ offensive tackles, especially with right tackle Derek Kerstetter moving inside to center, is an inexperienced group outside of the potential All-American. If Cosmi goes down, the Longhorns are in trouble.
It is true that the Longhorns would be in trouble if Cosmi were to go down. The players behind him in the depth chart lack the experience of Samuel. Not only that but Cosmi is one of the top offensive tackles in the country behind Oregon’s Penei Sewell. Both are viewed as top 10 selections in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. The best friend of a quarterback will always be the man who blocks his blindside, so for the Longhorns Cosmi would be the most indispensable non quarterback for them.
