This country continues to be ripped apart by the tragic and senseless death of George Floyd while in police custody. While there’s been a lot of unity across racial divides with protests and voices of change, it’s still a subject that can cause division, even among the closest of friends.
It can apparently cause division among teammates in the NFL as well. Even teammates with a strong, Hall of Fame type relationship on the field.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees sat down for an interview with Yahoo and disagreed with NFL players kneeling for the national anthem, despite the civil unrest this country is currently under.
“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America, or our country,” Brees said. “… I envision my two grandfathers, who fought for this country during World War II — one in the Army, and one in the Marine Corp. — both risking their lives to protect our country and to try to make our country and this world a better place.”
Brees went on to say that teammates standing together with their hands on their hearts during the anthem showed “unity.”
Former Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas, and Brees’ No. 1 weapon in the passing, game did not agree at all with his comments according to some Tweets he set off shortly after.
At first, Thomas thought maybe Brees just didn’t know any better.
He don’t know no better.

But then, the NFL’s leading receiver from last season got a little more personal towards his feelings on the matter.
We don’t care if you don’t agree and whoever else how about that.

Thomas then ended the Twitter protest by retweeting another tweet that seemed to sum up his thoughts on Brees’ comments.

Clearly, change needs to occur in how the African American community is treated by the police and other positions of authority in this country. It’s clear too that there will be many differing opinions on how to best move forward.
But forward we must go, both swiftly and decisively.
