As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.
Each day, we’ll release anywhere from 2-3 player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.
Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.
Next up on the list is redshirt sophomore safety Eddie Smith out of Slidell (La.).
Eddie Smith, Safety
Height: 6-0 / Weight: 196
Class: Redshirt Sophomore
Hometown: Slidell (La.)
High School: Salmen High School
HS ranking (247Sports): 3-star / No. 435 overall / No. 42 CB / No. 15 LA
HS ranking (Rivals): 3-star / N/A overall / No. 47 CB / No. 17 LA
Analysis: Eddie Smith is one of those rare players who redshirted his second season on campus instead of his first. As a true freshman, he played in six games with a role on special teams while his sophomore season only saw him play in one game against New Mexico State.
Smith came in as a cornerback but eventually made the move to safety, which could prove to be useful with the losses of starters Xavier McKinney and Jared Mayden.
He’ll still have to compete with Daniel Wright, DeMarcco Hellams, true freshman Brian Branch and others for a chance to start next to Jordan Battle, however. But don’t be surprised if Smith is able to recapture his role on special teams while becoming more of a core member on those units.
