Former Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon to transfer to Ohio State

Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon will be transferring to Ohio State for his senior season. He announced the decision Monday on Twitter.

No longer is it about just pulling in the best recruiting class. Part of shopping for the groceries in big-time college football now includes making a list from the transfer portal. We saw it when Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State and made a huge difference, and now we might have another key transfer.

That’s because Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon, who recently entered the transfer portal, announced Sunday on Twitter that he’ll be joining Ohio State as a graduate transfer.

Sermon has plenty of playing experience in Norman. As a freshman in 2017, he rushed for 744 yards and five touchdowns. Ohio State fans may remember him well from his 62 yards on 17 carries, including a ten-yard touchdown catch in the Sooners 31-17 win over the Buckeyes (the flag plant game).

In 2018, Sermon almost rushed just shy of 1,000 yards and scored 13 TDs on the ground. He didn’t have as productive of a campaign last season due to the emergence of Kennedy Brooks and a leg injury he suffered. Still, he will immediately present the coaching staff with a proven guy that will contend for the starting job right away.

As for why the 6-foot, 221-pound running back decided on Ohio State, Sermon had this to say to Austin Ward’s Letterman Row.

“I just believe it’s the best situation for me,” Sermon told Letterman Row. “I know that I have the opportunity to play there considering the depth, and I had a relationship with Alford (Ohio State RBs coach) during my recruiting process coming out of high school. He was a great guy then, and I just feel like I connected well with him. I know I’m going to have to go in and compete for the job, but I feel like it’s the best situation for me to go into now.”

Master Teague, Steele Chambers Marcus Crowley, and Miya Williams will all have something to say with that, but Sermon came to Columbus to play, and his chances are pretty good.
