The New York Giants appear poised to hire Jason Garrett as their next offensive coordinator, but they were hoping to speak to a few more people before making that final decision.
In addition to Garrett and Mike Shula, the Giants had sought permission from the Buffalo Bills to interview their current offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll.
They were denied.
Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports:
The 44-year-old Daboll, who was on the New England Patriots staff with Judge from 2013-16, was high atop Judge’s wish list when he was hired by the Giants, multiple sources told SNY. The Giants requested permission for Judge to interview Daboll, the sources said, but that permission was denied by the Bills.
Daboll had done tremendous work this past season in Buffalo, helping to lead them to a 10-6 record while speeding up Josh Allen’s developmental curve. As a result, he generated significant interest in coaching circles, even earning an interview with the Cleveland Browns for their then-vacant head coaching position.
Daboll also has a Joe Judge connection, having worked alongside of him as a part of Bill Belichick’s staff in New England from 2013-2016. Daboll also spent 2017 as part of Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama.
