The QB room is OK
Allen and Matt Barkley have had a pretty harmonious relationship over the last several years.
Barkley was brought in on short notice in 2018 against the Jets, and has gelled pretty well in this system. Barkley has been beneficial for numerous reasons. He’s not incredibly expensive, around a $2 million cap hit for the team, who wants to win-now and put pieces around Allen before the young talents on the team out-grow their rookie contracts.
If Barkley if anything, is consistent, has a small upside, and for now, has a wonderful supporting cast, in case of a Josh Allen emergency.
Bringing in Newton in any capacity may bring in an unwelcome divide into the locker room, and front office. If Allen has a bad game, do the coaching staff pull a Nathan Peterman Tyord Taylor like decision? Do players in the locker room want to see what Newton can do with this roster? All hypothetical, of course. While it could help Allen become a better quarterback, to have a more experienced backup in Newton as opposed to Barkley, the cons in this situation far out-weigh the pros.
