After being released by the Houston Texans practice squad, the San Francisco 49ers brought in veteran cornerback Jason Verrett for a workout before hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11 on Sunday.

Following his workout, Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers could potentially sign the former 49ers corner to their practice squad sometime next week although nothing is yet official.

Verrett spent three seasons with the 49ers before recently joining the Texans practice squad with former San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. Verrett shined at times for the 49ers but injuries continued to plague his career, playing only 15 games over three seasons.

Verrett suffered a ruptured achilles during practice in the November with the 49ers last season.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Verrett played four seasons with the San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers. During his second season in 2015, Verrett was named to the Pro Bowl.

Verrett was drafted in the first round of the 2014 draft out of TCU. Prior to his tine at TCU, Verrett spent time playing at the junior college level in the Bay Area at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Verrett could bring a proven veteran corner that’s familiar with the system to a young defensive back group with the 49ers.
