Taking a risk with Tyler

Speaking of that scrimmage, the Bills made a huge decision on their roster after it. Rookie kicker Tyler Bass, a sixth-round pick of the Bills, officially won the team’s kicking job. Bass was 2-for-3 kicking in the scrimmage and his miss was from 55 yards on a windy day. Now former Bill Stephen Hauschka missed an extra-point attempt and that was all she wrote for him after the exhibition game.

Following practice on Sunday, Bass spoke via video conference to reporters, but so did special teams coordinator Health Farwell. The coach said that Bass “earned the job.” But in saying that, Farwell said he knows it’ll be up-and-down with Bass because he’s a rookie… how Farwell described the decision was “taking a leap of faith.” While maybe not the highest of praise, it certainly sounds like the Bills will be giving him some slack as he enters his first season in the NFL. Also for what it’s worth, Bass was 6-for-6 during kicks on during Sunday’s practice, a good follow up to winning the kicking battle.
