The PGA Tour is back in Texas this week for the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge at historic Colonial Country Club, which underwent a major renovation since last year’s tournament. The 1st round begins on Thursday morning from Fort Worth, Texas.

After an eventful week in Louisville for the PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler is back in the field for the Charles Schwab Challenge. He’s played this event in each of the last 4 years and comes in as the heavy favorite at +275. Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Tony Finau are all teeing it up in Fort Worth, as well.
Colonial Country Club underwent a complete renovation following last year’s tournament, with the entire infrastructure of the course being upgraded. Greens have been moved and bunkers were taken out, all as part of the renovation done by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. It’s a par 70 and will play at 7,289 yards this week.

Collin Morikawa (+240)
Morikawa came in the top 5 last week at the PGA Championship despite shooting even par in Round 4, which just goes to show how well he played from Thursday to Saturday. This is a shorter course that emphasizes accuracy and putting, which suits Morikawa’s game despite his flat stick going cold on Sunday.
Harris English (+600)
English ranked 6th in strokes gained: putting at Valhalla, a trend that should carry over to Colonial where he finished 12th last year. He also gained 1.03 strokes on approach at the PGA Championship so he’s flushing his irons at the moment.
Charles Schwab Challenge – Top-10 picks
Jordan Spieth (+200)
Spieth is a hard player to trust right now with how cold he’s been, but this could be the week that gets him going. He’s back home in the Dallas area and playing a course where he’s won before, also notching 7 top-10s since 2015.
Keegan Bradley (+400)
Bradley shot 2-under on Sunday to finish 18th in the PGA Championship, another strong finish from the former major champion. He led the field in SG: off the tee last week (+1.65) so now that the driver is working, he could put it all together in Fort Worth. In his last start here (2020), he finished 32nd.
Tom Hoge (+375)
Hoge was unsurprisingly near the top last week in SG: approach, ranking 12th in that category at Valhalla. Always a great iron player, Hoge’s game fits Colonial well despite the fact that his history here isn’t anything to write home about.

Charles Schwab Challenge – Top-20 picks
Brendon Todd (+320)
Colonial is a short course for short hitters who can putt. Enter Brendon Todd, who’s 33rd in driving accuracy this season. He had back-to-back finishes of 8th and 3rd in 2021 and 2022 at this event, as well.
Brian Harman (+160)
Harman is another player who could probably use a break from longer courses such as Quail Hollow and Valhalla. He’ll get that this week at Colonial where he’ll get to hit far more short-to-mid irons into greens. He finished 8th here in 2021.
Justin Rose (+180)
Rose had the putter rolling at the PGA Championship, ranking 3rd in SG: putting at Valhalla. In the last 4 years, Rose has finished 3rd, 20th and 12th in this event, along with a missed cut in 2022.

Keegan Bradley (-105) vs. Denny McCarthy (-125)
McCarthy hasn’t finished better than 27th in this event in the last 5 years. Bradley seems to have found something with his driver after leading the PGA Championship in SG: off the tee. Take Bradley as the slight underdog in this matchup.

Justin Rose (+175)
For all the reasons listed above in the top-20 section, I like Rose to be the highest English finisher at Colonial. Aaron Rai (+150) is the only other player with shorter than +650 odds.
Charles Schwab Challenge – First-round leader
Collin Morikawa (+2500)
Morikawa is 4th in Round 1 scoring average this season (68.1) and riding a lot of momentum since the PGA Championship where he finished 4th. He could come out firing in the 1st round and take an early lead.
Scottie Scheffler top 10 (+100)
There aren’t many ways to get Scheffler at plus-money this week – he’s -175 for a top-5 – but you could take him to simply be in the top 10 after Round 1. He leads the tour in 1st-round scoring average (67.5) and is often near the top of the leaderboard after Thursday’s round.

Group C winner: Keegan Bradley (+375)
Bradley is tied with Billy Horschel for the longest odds in this group, though there is no heavy favorite among the 5 players. Sepp Straka has the shortest odds at +320, followed by Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Denny McCarthy at +350. Bradley played extremely well at the PGA Championship with an 18th-place finish and has now come in the top 21 in each of his last 2 starts.
