Studs and duds from Colts’ overtime loss to Titans

Studs and duds from the Colts’ 34-31 loss to the Titans.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-5) squandered their chances to grab a season-changing win but instead choked their way to a 34-31 loss in overtime against the Tennessee Titans (6-2) on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts started out the game dominating on both sides of the ball and had a 14-point lead early on in the first quarter. They wound up squandering that lead by the time the first half ended and then threw the game away at the end of regulation and in overtime.

The Colts are now three games back of the Titans in the division and have seen their chances at the playoffs dwindle.

Here’s Adrian Phillips’ crucial, 4th-quarter interception against Chargers

Adrian Phillips recorded a key interception on Sunday.

With the New England Patriots trailing by one, safety Adrian Phillips returned an interception to the end zone to give New England the lead.

With the fourth quarter well underway, Phillips picked off a Justin Herbert pass for his second interception of the season. It was his first takeaway since Week 1 against the New York Jets. This was also his fifth takeaway as a member of the New England Patriots.

For Phillips, it gave him a chance to make an impact against his former team. The safety was acquired by New England in the 2020 offseason.

With the Patriots in a position to get to .500, the Phillips interception may prove to be crucial in making it happen.

An unofficial visitor, who was on campus this weekend, announced his final six schools on Sunday evening via social media.

North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) three-star shooting forward R.J. Godfrey is down to Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Utah and Ole Miss.

Clemson offered the 6-7, top-150 prospect earlier this month. He was in The Valley this weekend, along with his younger brother, Grant, who is a four-star linebacker in the 2023 class that’s being recruited by Dabo Swinney and Co.

R.J. is also the son of former University of Georgia and NFL linebacker, Randall Godfrey.

Godfrey recently wrapped up a mid-week official visit to Texas Tech. He’s also been on official visits to Ole Miss and Utah, as well as unofficial(s) to Georgia and Georgia Tech.

He was among seven unofficial visitors on campus for Clemson’s basketball program this weekend.

Cooper Kupp made history again by topping 900 yards and 10 TDs in first 8 games

Cooper Kupp continues to set records with his red-hot start to the season, already totaling 900 yards and 10 touchdowns in 8 games.

Cooper Kupp was always a good receiver for the Rams, putting up solid numbers when healthy during his first four seasons. But this year, he’s taken his game to another level with Matthew Stafford as his quarterback.

Kupp entered Week 8 leading the NFL in targets, receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, putting himself into the conversation as the best wide receiver in football. All he did on Sunday against the Texans was improve on those numbers, catching another seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.

He now has 63 catches for 924 yards and 10 touchdowns, continuing to make NFL history. According to NFL Research on Twitter, Kupp is the first player in the Super Bowl era (since 1970) with at least 900 yards and 10 touchdown catches in his first eight games.

The only other players in NFL history with at least 900 yards and 10 touchdown catches through the first eight games were Elroy Hirsch (1951), Bobby Mitchell (1962) and Billy Howton (1956), according to Stathead.

Kupp is now on pace for 1,964 yards this season, which would tie Calvin Johnson’s single-season record. It’ll be a tough pace to keep up, but Kupp is more than capable of doing it.

Seahawks with touchdown return of Jaguars’ attempted onside kick

The Jaguars’ onside kick attempt backfired in a big way

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ string of good fortune ends with a victory over the Miami Dolphins and a bye.

They were picked apart by Geno Smith and didn’t score until there were less than two minutes to go in Sunday’s game at Seattle.

Urban Meyer decided to go for an onside kick and did that backfire.

Watch as Travis Homer picks up the ball and takes it 44 yards to the end zone for a TD that made it 31-7 after the PAT.

This is bad but nowhere near as bad as what happened to Northwestern in the 2005 Sun Bowl.

The Wildcats attempted a pair of onside kicks against the Bruins and both went into the hands of Brandon Breazell, who scored a pair of touchdowns.

Panthers react to snapping their four-game losing streak

Before Sunday, the Panthers had gone winless over the previous 37 days. Now that their long losing streak is finally over, it’s time to celebrate!

Prior to kickoff here in Week 8, the Carolina Panthers hadn’t won a game since Sept. 23. And that was against the Houston Texans.

It’s been 37 days. 37 long, disappointing, embarrassing, injury-ridden days since a victory. So when that wait finally came to end, the Panthers were not to be blamed nor denied of their rightful postgame celebrations.

Here’s how Carolina took to social media on Sunday evening following their 19-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Let’s start with the team account, one of professional sports’ most beloved outlets of social media goodness.

Well played.

That was almost as well played, in fact, as cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s game-clinching interception. Gilmore’s takeaway got a few of his teammates pretty hyped, too.

Offensive coordinator Joe Brady only tweets when Carolina wins. The triumph marked his return.

Also, someone is going to have to see if they can get linebacker Haason Reddick, who is now up to 7.5 sacks on the year, this poster. Does anyone know this woman?

Lastly, we’ll close things out with Reddick’s sack bro in defensive end Brian Burns. Burns, who also got in on the action, is getting ready for the next one.

On to New England.

The Utah Jazz (4-1) play against the Milwaukee Bucks (3-3) at Fiserv Forum

Game Time: 7:00 PM EDT on Sunday October 31, 2021

Utah Jazz 98, Milwaukee Bucks 87 (Q4 03:14)

What’s the buzz on Twitter?

Sarah Todd @NBASarah
There is not a single person on this Jazz team or coaching staff that wants JC to stop shooting or take different shots. – 9:06 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Jordan Clarkson would not be denied there and just took it – that five-point #Jazz lead has now stretched it again to double digits at 97-84 with 4:23 to go in this one. – 9:05 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz go on a 7-0 run with Mitchell coming up with two huge possessions. They now lead 97-84 when things were on the brink of getting out of control. That was a mature two minutes from Utah – 9:05 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Big-time hustle play there from JC, who snags the loose ball and races in for the layup. And just like that, Jazz lead is back up to 97-84 with 4:23 to go. – 9:05 PM
Rob Peterson @ShotDrJr
This is not the Bucks’ week. – 9:05 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Portis is yapping at O’Neale and Royce is yapping right back – 9:04 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Bucks cut the lead to five. Building is rocking. Clarkson stops some of the bleeding with a basket but then incurs a technical foul. Long way to go here. – 9:01 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Fiserv Forum coming to life for the first time this weekend as the Bucks cut it to five. And then Giannis Antetokounmpo missed a 3-pointer to cut it to 2 and then Jordan Clarkson got a bucket in transition.
Jazz up, 90-83, with 5:58 left. – 9:00 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
#Bucks get it to two possessions again, this time 88-83 … – 8:59 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Jazz offense is a mess right now, but EP salvaged that possession with a right place, right time throwdown – 8:58 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Eric Paschall: Giannis stopper (sarcasm) – 8:56 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Couple steals from the Bucks and a pretty lookaway pass from Giannis Antetokounmpo in transition and the Bucks have the Jazz lead back down to single digits, 86-77, with 9:17 left. – 8:52 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz lead is down to 86-77….Quin Snyder calls time…. – 8:52 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
End 3Q: Jazz 84, Bucks 69. Huge run at the end of the period there. Don racks up 17 in a short span, Utah ratchets up the defensive intensity, and suddenly they’ve got some breathing room. Conley 18p, Don 17p, Bogey 14p. – 8:47 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
Jazz up 84-69 after 3Q. The Bucks are super shorthanded, but this is a pretty impressive performance. The defense has just been outstanding. – 8:47 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
End of three. The Jazz lead the Bucks 84-69….. – 8:46 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
In the last week, the Bucks just have not been able to hit the big 3 that they need to break things open offensively.
Seemingly every 3 that could get them back in the game just doesn’t fall, no matter how open the look might be or the quality of the shooter. – 8:43 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Mitchell scored seven in about a minute. Now has 17…good sequence from him.
Jazz have just 14 off the bench tonight – 8:42 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
10-2 run for the Jazz. Donovan Mitchell offense, Royce O’Neale and Hassan Whiteside defense the keys. – 8:42 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Royce with the strip, then the aggressive drive to the hoop for the lay-in. Jazz lead is up to 77-65 with 2:43 left 3Q. – 8:42 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
#Jazz lead 77-65.
A three-pointer early by Mitchell was changed to a two. – 8:42 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz lead the Bucks 77-65…2:43 remaining in the third quarter – 8:41 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
And now 7 straight points for Mitchell. It works when he’s attacking Grayson Allen! – 8:40 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Justin Robinson’s bail out three got the #Bucks to within five, but Donovan Mitchell had none of that…#Jazz currently up 73-63. – 8:38 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
I understand why Donovan attacks guys like Lu Dort in iso, at least Dort’s been assigned to guard him. But why get the switch against Giannis, and be like, “yep, this is our best shot here, shut the rest of the offense down” – 8:29 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
The #Bucks keep hanging around – trail 64-58 after being down 13 early in the second quarter. – 8:27 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Giannis hits a three and the Bucks pull within 64-58 of the Jazz….7:21 remaining in the third quarter – 8:27 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Giannis Antetokounmpo has now picked up two quick fouls in opening minutes of the third quarter. He has three. #Bucks trail 62-51. – 8:24 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Thanasis Antetokounmpo tried to dunk on Gobert. That did not work. – 8:24 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Rodney Hood has a right hand contusion and won’t return – 8:24 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Rodney Hood has a right hand contusion and will not retun – 8:23 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Per @BucksPR, Rodney Hood (right hand contusion) will not return to tonight’s game. – 8:21 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Rodney Hood bruised his right hand – he is out for the rest of the night. #Bucks even more shorthanded. – 8:21 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Rodney Hood is out on the court for the #Bucks as they warm up to start the second half, but I wouldn’t say he’s doing much. – 8:16 PM
Ben Anderson @BensHoops
The Jazz are following the Anthony Edwards school of though on Giannis Antetokounmpo (you can look up his hilarious quote) by recognizing he’s going to get his, and trying to slow down his teammates.
Giannis is 6-9 from the floor while the rest of the team is just 13-38. – 8:16 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
HALFTIME: Jazz 57, Bucks 48. Granted, no Middleton, Holiday, Lopez, DiVincenzo for Milwaukee, but the Jazz looked really good that half. 10-24 from 3, Conley with 14p on 4-6 from deep. Negatives: JC’s shooting is still off (1-7), too many O-rebs allowed (9). – 8:05 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
Jazz up 57-48 at the half. Jazz’s 3-point shooting regressed to the mean, but they still enjoy the 9-point advantage. They’re allowing the Bucks to score just 65 points per 100 poss in the halfcourt… brilliant. – 8:05 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
End of the first half: the Jazz lead Milwaukee 57-48….14 for Conley to lead Utah. 10 for Mitchell and Bogdanovic…..15 for Giannis to lead all scorers – 8:04 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Half: Jazz 57, Bucks 48 – 8:03 PM
Kane Pitman @KanePitman
Rodney Hood back to the locker room early. Fair to say the Bucks could do without another injury. – 8:02 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
He missed his first three attempts, but Portis got his fourth 3-pointer to fall tonight. No Semi Ojeleye 0-for-_ streak going for Portis. – 8:01 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Conley 3s are so predictable. I wanted a Rudy jumper. – 8:00 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
That’s a great pass from Mitchell to Bogdanovic – 7:58 PM
Ben Anderson @BensHoops
That was a championship level sequence from the Jazz.
Good defense from Jordan Clarkson, passed Grayson Allen off to Gobert for the block, turned into a steal from Mitchell, into a beautiful bounce pass from Mitchell to O’Neale for the dunk. – 7:55 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
The #Bucks have cooled off (40% from the floor, 29.4% from three) but they’re hanging around, down 50-41. #Jazz pushed the lead to 13 earlier this quarter but weren’t able to stretch it… – 7:55 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz are 4 of their last 21 from 3 after a 5-5 start…..they lead Milwaukee 50-41….2:30 remaining in the first half – 7:55 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Hill-Allen-Nwora-Hood-T. Antetokounmpo for the Bucks right now. Just tough to find the necessary creation for this unit on offense.
Allen just tried to take it at Gobert off the dribble. it did not work. – 7:54 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Rudy Gobert just murdered Grayson Allen – 7:54 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Bobby Portis with six points in seven minutes thus far tonight. Missed both of his 3-point attempts, but he’s managed to use his size to get to his spots and hit some short jumpers.
Jazz still up, 46-35, with 6:13 left in the second quarter though. – 7:46 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
So Jared Butler has been on the ball in his minutes tonight. Big change from every other game where he’s been playing out of the corner in his minutes….definitely seems strategic – 7:45 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Butler with a block on Portis’ shot attempt. Looked like maybe Portis dapped him up afterward? Yes?/No? – 7:45 PM
Kane Pitman @KanePitman
A lottttt of jumpers for Giannis tonight. On a back-to-back basically playing a lone hand as a creator, defensive big and lead scorer. Wouldn’t be surprised if he keeps chucking them up. Fatigue would be setting in. – 7:40 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Mike Conley is a REALLY good basketball player…..just so skilled at every part of the game – 7:40 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Great catch and pivot and opposite find from Gobert to Conley for three. That’s the kind of play he used to not be able to make – 7:38 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
After one quarter, the Jazz lead, 30-23. Antetokounmpo with 8 and Allen with 6.
Advanced Stats:
OffRtg: 109.5
DefRtg: 150.0
Net Rtg: -41.5
ORB%: 33.3%
DRB%: 75.0% – 7:36 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
End 1Q: Jazz 30, Bucks 23. Utah really surged against Milwaukee’s second unit. They also cooled down from 3 — started 5-5, then went 1-5. Donovan leads with 10p, Giannis has 8. – 7:35 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
Jazz up 30-23 after 1Q. They went 6-10 from three in the quarter to get the lead, but there was some other stuff Snyder wasn’t happy about. Still, good start for Utah. – 7:35 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
End of the first quarter. The Jazz lead the Bucks 30-23….10 for Mitchell on perfect shooting. 8 for giannis to lead the bucks. – 7:35 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz should probably be up more than seven….bucks second unit hasn’t scored yet – 7:32 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Sandro Mamukelashvili back in the Bucks’ rotation tonight with Middleton out. – 7:31 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Not a Rodney Hood revenge game so far – 7:31 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz have surrendered 9 second chance points in the first quarter and I’m not sure the bucks have gotten an offensive rebound that the Jazz shouldn’t have gotten to – 7:25 PM
Sarah Todd @NBASarah
Giannis oop as ‘Everybody wants to rule the world’ plays in Milwaukee. pic.twitter.com/RvKPGbxZ207:25 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Jazz rebounding has been poor. Bucks are getting to the offensive boards way too easily right now. Quin calls timeout to sort it out. JAzz 23-21, 4:35 left 1Q. – 7:23 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz lead the Bucks 23-21 with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter – 7:23 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
#Bucks chase down a few offensive rebounds, which lead to a three straight buckets. #Jazz lead 23-21 with 4:35 to go in the first quarter. – 7:23 PM
Andy Larsen @andyblarsen
Jazz need more rebounding from non-Gobert players… they’re standing flat footed at the moment – 7:22 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
George Hill revenge game – 7:21 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Jazz have gotten off to a great offensive start — 6 of 7 overall, 5-5 from 3. Far too lax on the other end, though. Still, you can see the instant impact of the return of Mike Conley, w/6p. Jazz lead 18-14 with 7:08 left 1Q. – 7:18 PM
Jim Owczarski @JimOwczarski
Giannis Antetokounmpo hits a couple of jumpers and Grayson Allen a pair of threes – #Bucks trail 18-14. #Jazz are 5-for-5 from behind the three-point line. – 7:17 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
7:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Jazz lead the Bucks 18-14 – 7:17 PM
Ben Anderson @BensHoops
Jazz offense picking up where BYU left off last night.
Their defense too. – 7:16 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Bobby Portis is the first sub off the bench for the Bucks tonight. – 7:16 PM
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
The Jazz are five for five from three to start the game – 7:15 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Giannis just met Gobert at the rim and swatted a two-hand dunk attempt.
Typically get that meeting at the rim at least once in a Jazz-Bucks game. – 7:15 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Jazz are 5 for 5 on 3s now – 7:15 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Grayson Allen revenge game – 7:13 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
After two triples from the Jazz, Grayson Allen hits the Bucks’ first shot, a 3, to get the Bucks’ scoring started for the night. – 7:12 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
After not shooting great from 3 to start the season, Don and Royce nail 3s on the JAzz’s first two possessions tonight. – 7:12 PM

Pat Connaughton gets the call to start for the #Bucks with Khris Middleton a late scratch.

Quin Snyder on the @Utah Jazz 20 turnovers last night against the Bulls.
“Last night was a good example of the type of turnovers that we really can’t have because they didn’t come from trying to make an extra pass.
I wasn’t happy with our efficiency.”
#TakeNote | @KSLSports – 5:48 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
After the media session was over, Quin stuck around to ask Milwaukee media if Giannis and Khris Middleton had expressed the same frustrations regarding physicality, which they said the two had. He then joked, “It’s like Joe Dumars is out there.” – 5:47 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Asked about the Jazz talking about the extra physicality they’ve faced from defenders this year, Quin intimated that the new point of emphasis rules have had the unintended consequence of enabling defenders to apply excessive contact in disrupting offensive players. – 5:40 PM
Eric Walden @tribjazz
Quin Snyder said the Jazz “haven’t shot as well as I think we’re capable of,” but he feels like they’re getting the shots he wants them to. – 5:34 PM

This Lillard shooting thing is weird. He scored 14 points on 5-of-20 shooting while going 2 of 14 on threes during a 125-113 loss at the Hornets. – 9:15 PM
Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA
Good win by the Hornets. It’s early, but they seem for real. Bunch of athletes, good shooters, solid depth. Just need some interior defense. – 9:14 PM
Mike Richman @mikegrich
A lot of the Blazers issues boil down to Dame’s shooting tonight but I think that Hornets’ size and athletes exposed some of Portland’s limitations as well. – 9:12 PM
