Kyle “KJ” Greene, Jr. was on campus and in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over NC State at Memorial Stadium last Saturday, Oct. 1.

Catching up with The Clemson Insider this past week, the 2024 four-star guard out of Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy recapped his latest visit to Clemson and gave the latest on his current recruitment.

“I mean, it was great,” Greene told The Clemson Insider regarding the visit. “From going to practice to touring the campus to the game, everything about the (visit) was very good.”

Since college coaches were able to directly contact juniors in the class of 2024 like Greene, he said that there hasn’t been one particular coach from Clemson that has been reaching out. The entire staff has been in on Greene, who has become a top target for the Tigers in the 2024 recruiting class.

“That definitely makes me feel like a priority,” he said.

With that being said, what was Greene able to hear from Clemson’s staff when he was back on campus?

“They were telling me how they are one of the top teams in the ACC and they’re on the rise in the ACC,” Greene added. “They feel like they need good players like myself to take them to that next level. They told me how they like my IQ and how they felt like something that sets me apart from a lot of other point guards.”

According to Greene, Clemson sees him as a lead guard. The Tigers have shown him some clips of Shelton Mitchell, and they want him to be that lead scoring guard, who can play a similar role at the next level.

“The main thing that they talk about that they like that they feel sets me apart is my IQ,” Greene said. “They tell me that I see the game on a different level and I can make plays that some people can’t. They also like my length. They definitely like a lot about my game.”

On his latest trip to Clemson, Greene was accompanied by his mother, father and sister.

“They were shocked,” he said. “They didn’t expect it to be as much as it was. They left very satisfied and excited with what Clemson has to offer.”

What was different about this unofficial visit compared to the one he took back in February?

“This time I got to see the whole campus,” Greene said. “I got to see some nice spots on campus — the freshman dorms and stuff. I got a better feel for the campus and then also going to the football game. That atmosphere was crazy that night. Seeing that and even going to practice, seeing how they practice behind the scenes and seeing how everything works, that’s what I would say made it different.”

Greene was at the University of Georgia this past Friday and will be taking his first official visit to Georgetown on Thursday and Friday of this upcoming week. He said that he’ll definitely try to take an official visit to Clemson, possibly in the spring of next year.

“I’d definitely say they’re towards the top,” Greene said regarding where Clemson currently stands in his recruitment.  “I would refer to it as a little bubble right now. They’re towards the top of that little bubble of schools.”

Standout NC guard talks Clemson visit, dishes on ‘huge’ offer

Concord (N.C.) Cannon School 2024 three-star combo guard Austin Swartz was on campus and in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over NC State at Memorial Stadium this past Saturday.

Catching up with The Clemson Insider on Tuesday night, Swartz said that he feels like Clemson made a great impression on him and his family and also indicated that he didn’t feel like they could do much better.

“It was good. It was pretty solid,” Swartz said regarding his visit to Clemson over the weekend. “The people were great. Everybody treated me great. I had a great experience. The football game was super cool. I even got to talk to some of the players. It really felt like somewhere I could really be at in a couple of years. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better atmosphere in my 17 years of living.”

Just under three hours before kickoff, Swartz picked up an offer from the Tigers after having an in-depth conversation with Clemson coach Brad Brownell. Swartz walked us through how he ultimately learned about his offer from the Tigers.

According to Swartz, Brownell told him that not only could he be a huge part of the Clemson basketball program, but the Tigers think he’s a good fit and can bring a lot to the table.

“It was huge,” Swartz said of receiving an offer from Clemson. “Of course, that brings them up a level and may be where I want to go in a year or two. It’s really huge though, for sure.”

Now that he has an offer from Clemson in hand, Swartz said that the Tigers are “definitely at the top” of his recruitment, but he also made sure to clarify that all the schools currently involved in his process are at the same level.

As far as his current recruitment is concerned, Swartz wants to enjoy the process and go through his junior season. He’ll likely render a college decision prior to his senior season, but he still has a ways to go.

Swartz sees himself as a guard that can run the 1 and the 2 while shooting the ball at an efficient rate. He brings a good amount of offense to the table but feels like he’s overall really well-balanced. He said that Clemson assistant coach Sean Dixon likes how he can create offense for not just himself, but for others around him as well.

He’s a fan of the way Clemson utilizes its guards. The Tigers oftentimes expect a lot from their guards defensively, which tends to give them more freedom on the offensive end.

“I think it’s great,” Swartz said. “They give their guards the ability to make a play. That’s about all you can ask for as a guard is to make a play and the ability to let you do that.”

Is Swartz looking forward to getting back to Clemson soon?

“Oh yeah, for sure,” he said.

Swartz will be taking an unofficial visit to Georgia this weekend, as well as unofficial(s) to Virginia Tech and NC State later this month.

Clemson’s family feel resonates with priority recruit during official visit

The Clemson Insider checked in with a priority recruit who was on campus this past weekend.

Cumberland (MD.) Bishop Walsh School four-star Mike Williams took an official visit, as he begins to narrow down his recruitment, which has been spearheaded by Clemson assistant coach Sean Dixon.

The top-100 national recruit is a combo guard, who can play both ends of the floor. Williams says that he plays defense very well and feels like it’s one of the strong suits of his game.

He went into more detail on his official visit to Clemson in a phone interview with The Clemson Insider earlier this week.

“Man, it was great,” Williams said. “It was a great visit. It was like a family there, honestly. Everyone was very genuine. It was just a great environment to be in.”

“Really just how genuine everyone was,” Williams said when asked what stood out about his official visit. “You know how some people try to put on a facade or something? Trying to be really happy, but they don’t really care about you. When I was down there, it kind of felt like they really did care about me. It was really like a family down there.”

Williams spoke highly of Dixon, who is in his first season as a Clemson assistant. He played at Presbyterian, where he also got his start in coaching. Dixon, a native of Marietta, Georgia, spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Middle Tennessee State.

Before that, Dixon spent five seasons on staff at UNC-Asheville, helping the Bulldogs win the Big South tournament championship in 2016, a share of the regular-season conference title in 2017 and the outright championship in 2018. He also served as Asheville’s recruiting coordinator.

“It’s been great (getting recruited by Dixon),” Williams said. “He’s a very good coach, a very great recruiter as well. He’s a very good guy all around. There’s not much you can really say bad about him.”

What part of Clemson’s recruiting pitch resonated the most with Williams?

“They are really building a relationship,” he said. “When I got down there, I felt like I already knew ‘em, even though I haven’t seen none of the guys and stuff before, like even before I came down there, some of the players were contacting me, making sure I was good and just things like that. It just really feels like a family down there.”

According to Williams, Clemson is looking for him to score the ball, play a little bit of point guard and also lock up on defense, while also having the chance to play alongside Dillon Hunter.

“I feel like I would fit into the system very well,” he said.

As far as a decision is concerned, Williams would like to have one made before the start of his senior season, but couldn’t give an exact timetable for when that might take place. Clemson was his first official visit and he’s set up additional officials to DePaul, Wake Forest, Syracuse and LSU. He’ll also be taking an unofficial visit to VCU.

Clemson one of five finalists for four-star wing from the Buckeye State

With one verbal commitment so far in its 2023 class, Clemson was named a finalist for a top 75 prospect on Friday.

Clemson is in contention for one of the premier recruits in the class of 2023.

Four-star wing Dailyn Swain took to Twitter on Friday to announce his five finalists of Arkansas, Arizona State, Clemson, Ohio State and Xavier.

The 6-foot-6, 170-pound Swain is the No. 75 overall recruit and the No. 15 small forward in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

While Ohio State is the favorite to land the Columbus, Ohio product, Swain still appears very interested in the Tigers.

“Clemson is fairly new in my recruitment process,” Swain told On3. “I am still working on building relationships with the staff. I am setting up a visit to the campus in the near future.”

So far, Clemson has landed one verbal commitment in its 2023 recruiting class in three-star small forward Asa Thomas.

‘It’s an ideal combination of academics and athletics’: Talented Illinois prospect talks Clemson commitment

Asa Thomas knew it was time.

It just felt right.

The three-star guard/forward out of Lake Forest (IL.) High School offered his verbal commitment to Brad Brownell’s program on Thursday afternoon, making him Clemson’s first class of 2023 pledge.

Thomas detailed his decision with The Clemson Insider Thursday.

“Clemson is in one of the top conferences in the country, where they play the best competition night in and night out,” Thomas said. “Clemson’s strong academic reputation was also a big factor in my decision. It’s an ideal combination of academics and athletics for me.”

Additionally, it was Brownell and assistant head coach Billy Donlon who made Thomas feel like a priority right away. That led the 6-foot-6, 185-pound rising senior to pick the Tigers over programs like DePaul, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

“My relationship with Coach Brownell and Coach Donlon is great,” he said. “We talk on the daily and it feels like home every time I talk to them. Coach Donlon is from around my area, so he and I clicked right away.”

According to Thomas, Brownell has insisted that Clemson needs a shooter like himself and he feels as though he can fit that role.

Thomas is a self-described versatile threat on the offensive end. He’s the type of player that can be used in different spots, whether you need him to knock down a three or play his back to the basket — he can see the court pretty well.

What can Clemson fans expect out of Thomas once he arrives in Tiger Town?

“Clemson fans can expect a guy that’s going to leave it all out there every play,” Thomas said. “They are going to get a shot maker and a guy that can make others around him better.”

While Thomas hasn’t set up an official visit quite yet, he’s hoping he can set one up for the fall, which could coincide with a football game.

“I knew I didn’t need to wait any longer,” he said regarding Thursday’s decision,” and now I can focus on just getting better and having a great senior season with my guys.”

Clemson adds major addition to 2023 class

Clemson has landed its first class of 2023 commitment. Lake Forest’s (IL.) three-star Asa Thomas announced his verbal pledge to Brad Brownell’s program via social media on Thursday afternoon. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard/forward from the class of …

Clemson has landed its first class of 2023 commitment.

Lake Forest’s (IL.) three-star Asa Thomas announced his verbal pledge to Brad Brownell’s program via social media on Thursday afternoon.

The 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard/forward from the class of 2023 committed to Clemson over programs like DePaul, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

“They explained to me how I would fit and they extended the offer during that zoom,” Thomas told The Clemson Insider after receiving an offer from the Tigers on June 21. “I was really excited. My family and I really appreciate their belief in me.”

Clemson assistant head coach Billy Donlon spearheaded Thomas’ recruitment and landed his first recruit as a member of Brownell’s staff.

“Coach Donlon is from my area, so we had an instant connection and that has carried over with Coach Brownell and the rest of the staff, ” Thomas said. “The program is built on a great foundation. They have been right there year after year in one of the best conferences in the country.”

After Clemson extended an offer to Thomas last month, we asked the Illinois native where the Tigers currently stood in his recruitment. He told us at that time that Clemson was “up there” and that he would let things play out, with a decision likely coming soon.

A decision came to head nearly three weeks later.

Thomas is a self-described versatile threat on the offensive end. He’s the type of player that can be used in different spots, whether you need him to knock down a three or play his back to the basket — he can see the court pretty well.

247Sports considers Thomas to be a top-200 national recruit.

As Clemson looks to further add to its 2023 recruiting class, the staff remains committed to finding the best players that fit Brownell’s system whether it be high school prospects or portal prospects.

Clemson became the latest program to offer Lake Forest’s (IL.) Asa Thomas.

Thomas announced on Twitter Tuesday that Clemson had extended an offer to him over a Zoom call. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard/forward from the class of 2023 also lists offers from programs like DePaul, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

“They explained to me how I would fit and they extended the offer during that zoom,” Thomas told The Clemson Insider. “I was really excited. My family and I really appreciate their belief in me.”

He jumped on Tuesday’s Zoom call with Clemson head coach Brad Brownell, assistant head coach Billy Donlon and director of recruiting Lucas McKay.

Clemson has been texting and calling Thomas a lot recently, which not only means a lot to the Illinois native but it also proves to him just how interested the Tigers are in him.

“Coach Donlon is from my area, so we had an instant connection and that has carried over with Coach Brownell and the rest of the staff, ” Thomas said. “The program is built on a great foundation. They have been right there year after year in one of the best conferences in the country.”

“Clemson is up there right now,” he said. “Just letting it all play out and am trying to figure it out soon.”

‘Do-it-all’ forward stoked about Clemson offer he was ‘waiting for’

Clemson became the latest program to offer Waukee (IA.) Northwest’s Pryce Sandfort.

The 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward from the class of 2023 announced on Twitter Monday that Clemson had extended an offer to him. The Tigers are heavily involved in his recruitment, as well as schools like Drake, Iowa and Nebraska.

“They’ve been recruiting me for a while and they’ve been telling me that they’re really serious and ready to move forward with the recruitment,” Sandfort told The Clemson Insider. “I got a call from Coach (Brad) Brownell Monday. He said that they really liked me down at Clemson and wanted to offer me a scholarship.”

According to Sandfort, Clemson’s head coach talked a lot about how they really need a shooter to come in from the class of 2023 and that’s why they really want him to be a part of their program.

“I was real excited,” he said about receiving Monday’s offer from Clemson. “I was kind of waiting for that offer for a while. I thought it’d come and I just wasn’t sure when. It finally happened and I was really excited.”

Now that he has an offer from Clemson in hand, where do the Tigers currently stand in Sandfort’s recruitment?

“They’re up there,” Sandfort said. “I’m still gonna go through July and see what comes to me and then make a decision in the fall, but right now they’re up there.”

Sandfort wants to check out Clemson for himself and is looking at possibly making an official visit to Tiger Town within the next couple of weeks. He’s coming off an official to Drake and will be visiting Iowa in late July and will do so again this fall, as well as Nebraska.

As for Clemson, Sandfort talked highly about the relationships he’s been able to cultivate with members of the Tigers’ coaching staff.

“I have a really close relationship with (Director of Recruiting) Lucas McKay,” Sandfort said. “He was the one that first reached out to me and it was the first day they could contact the 2023 class. He was the one that reached out to me right away and he’s talked to me ever since then. I’ve gotten really close with him and (assistant) coach (Dick) Bender.”

According to Sandfort, Clemson has told him that they love his shooting, size and length. He assumes that the Tigers, who like his versatility and his ability to shoot it, would use him as a wing at the next level.

“I’d say I’m a do-it-all guy,” he said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’m known for my shooting ability, but I think that I can get downhill well, pass it well, defend, shoot, everything. I think I’m an all-around really good player, but some might see me as a shooter. I’m trying to become an all-around type of guy.”

Recruiting-wise, things have really started to pick up for Sandfort, who is aiming to have a decision made this fall, prior to his senior season.

His decision will come down to a couple of important things.

“The culture is really important to me,” Sandfort said. “What type of guys are they bringing in? The character of the guys they’re recruiting and the guys they have in their program right now, playstyle and how I get along with the coaches and how they see me fitting in their program. I feel like that’s all gonna be really big when I make a decision.”

Sandfort’s older brother, Payton, is currently a sophomore at Iowa and has pushed him to join him in Iowa City. At the end of the day, Pryce made it clear that it’s his decision and he’s gonna do what feels best for him and his family.

‘A neat story’: Brownell talks addition of former Big 12 pledge, brother of current Tiger

AIKEN, S.C. — From one Hunter to another, Brad Brownell is happy to have another in the fold.

Brownell and his staff announced the addition of 2022 four-star point guard Dillon Hunter (Atlanta, Ga./Sunrise Christian Academy) on Thursday.

Hunter, the younger brother of current Tiger Chase Hunter, is ranked No. 64 in the ESPN 100 and rated a four-star prospect.

Speaking with The Clemson Insider at Thursday’s Prowl & Growl event at Aiken Technical College, Brownell had the first chance to comment publicly about the former Baylor commit, whose signing became official earlier in the day.

“Kind of a neat story really to get Dillon to come play with Chase,” Brownell said Thursday. “He’s a big guard that really has great vision and passing and distributes the ball well. I think he’ll be a good defender. We need to work with him on the shooting a little bit more, but love his size.”

Brownell emphasized that Clemson wanted to recruit positional size  in the freshman class and thinks that the Tigers certainly did that.

“I think most of the guys we signed are all pretty big and long for their positions,” he said. “I think that was something that we wanted to address and certainly Dillon’s one of those guys that helps us in the backcourt.

TCI asked Brownell if he envisions Dillon being able to contribute right away.

“Yeah, I think he’ll help us some,” Brownell said. “It’s going to be interesting to see how he picks up things. As much as anything, it’s the mental part of it, especially the point guard position. The decision-making and the dealing with the pressure is the thing that you’ve got to deal with most as a young player and that’s not easy to do. But, (I’m) optimistic that he’ll be able to help us a little bit for sure.”

Dillon joins a freshman class that includes Kimball (Dallas, TX.) combo guard Chauncey Gibson, Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) forward Chauncey Wiggins and North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) forward R.J. Godfrey.

Standing at 6-foot-4, Dillon brings some impressive height to go along with Gibson (6-6), Godfrey (6-7) and Wiggins (6-10).

“At the end of the day, we just felt like we’ve been a little smaller the last couple of years and if we could,” Brownell said, “we wanted to go out and try to find some guys that had a little more length…That was something that we certainly wanted to do to help us. I think it helps you a lot defensively, can help you with some rebounding and then just they’re gonna be young, so they’re going to take some time to develop, but I think it’s a really good class. One of our better classes.”
